Sodium, in and of itself, isn't necessarily a problem. The problem is that prior to EM instituting a sodium compound in its SM motor oils (some have also speculated about the possibility that sodium may be tied to an antiwear agent), the presence of sodium almost inevitably indicated the presence of antifreeze contamination - and THAT is a real problem. Like the presence of silicon (which is now common in sealants, and harmless) we'll probably have to reassess our discomfort zone levels about sodium, too.
EM might not always make the best conventional motor oils (or maybe they do depending on your attitude), but their technical staff is not stupid.
