What is the function of this little plastic gray and red/orange item. It looks like it may have been 3D printed. It's glued to the top of a hand soap dispenser in Jefferson hospital of South Pittsburgh.

I don't know its function, and GROK ai came back with some hallucinations that are not plausible.

I was thinking that it might hold jewelery like a ring while one washes their hands. Maybe that's it?

The flag on rural mailboxes moves laterally to soap dispensers. Wow.
If something like this doesn't reaffirm one's faith in the superiority of our creative capacity and industrial might, I don't know what could.
I hope the inventor got one made of gold out of appreciation.

It's not a handle for the lid, just a flag for users to alert the custodian.
At one employer, there were 3 sinks in the men's room and each had a soap dispenser. The custodial staff would wait until all three dispensers were empty and then wait an additional day or two before refilling.

Someone, who shall remain nameless, left post-it notes on the mirror in the style of the old Burma Shave signs:

When washing up
I'd really rather
Do the job
with soapy lather

Burma Shave.

It actually worked.

sucks when you are in a restaurant bathroom and no soap or not paper towels and you look in the trash and it appears that it has been that way all day....

We (as a family) stopped at a McD's on a road trip once. The girls hit the restroom first while I stared at the menu, the perpetual "what do I want?" question in my head. Wife came out and stated "We're leaving--they're out of soap and towels." We left.

She wasn't quiet in stating this fact to me either. I didn't blame her and I wasn't hungry anymore.
