I do have the manual for it but it doesnt have the spec for the oil it just has the grade and it says that meets GM specs. i dont know which spec

If it doesn't list an exact spec like 4178 then I would imagine any SM GF-4 Oil on todays retail shelves would be fine in the specified 5w30 grade. These would include Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil-1 etc...

GM6094M would be the mfg's spec as has been stated. Also, the API spec/service level requirement at that time would be SL. Just look on the bottle. Most any oil will meet the GM6094M spec. It is not super hard to meet.

The current GM6094M spec would call for API SM oil but in 02 it would have been SL. Warranty should be long gone on it by now anwyay so it really doesn;t matter. GM6094M is nothing special so just pick a quality oil and you are good.

The actual cold weather performance of that spec, which is the meat and potatoes of the spec, would still be the same. Just been updated to add the new API service level. So any current GM6094M oil will be ok. Just won't have as much ZDDP as the oils around when the vehicle was new. Should be no problem using the current SM oils though.

great thanks. ya i know that castrol meets all the specs but i may be makeing the switch to rotella 5-40 synthetic cuz of the extra zddp

Once you're out of warranty, it doesn't matter what you run. You're responsible for what happens to the vehicles drivetrain etc.

Some would say you should stick with a 5w30, b/c of mileage concerns. On an 8.1-liter Chev truck, I don't think that's REALLY the goal.

RTS 5W-40 is an excellent oil!

Agreed. I simply answered his question as I did because I figured maybe he wanted to stay with the OE recommendations?
