So I'm talking to my co-worker yesterday....

We were talking about his truck, and we got to talking about what fluids he uses. Well, turns out he runs the triple combo of death in his new truck: Fram "Double Guard" Filter, Valvoline conventional, and a K&N air filter.

I quickly let him knew about the Fram common problems with construction, and that the Double guard added teflon to the engine oil ( dumbest idea evar)...he was shocked, he said he assumed it was the best cause 80%of the filters were fram at wal-mart and they sneak you into getting a fram by only putting out the application booklet for the fram filters.
I told him how valvoline, usually is a little skimpy on the addatives.
I recommended the Motorcraft filter + some Chevron Supreme or Castrol(did not want synthetic).
I also told him about the K&N, but I think he is keeping it. I run an open element K&N w/o problems myself, so i would be sort of hypocritical for me to talk smack about them

Now everyone in the office thinks I am some sort of oil analyst or something

I know there might be better oil, but I have used a lot of Valvoline in my life and it hasn't caused me any problems.

I run into the same problem. After lurking on this board - and many others - over the past five years, my friends can't understand where all this knowledge is coming from!... after all, I'm not a mechanic.

Many times I've had to keep my mouth shut because I could sense that at times people don't want to hear the harsh realities of auto ownership and maintenance.

LOL Today I told a guy at AAP he didn't want a K&N FIlter. THen he asked me about Purolator regular vs. PureOne. I told him the PurEone filters better but restricts more oil flow and that I would get the purolator. I told him to google "Oil Filter Study" but I doubt he will.

It feels good to be the smartest guy in the auto parts store!

At least you are using the K&N with your eyes open and making a conscious choice.

before finding and joining this forum. The influence is noticable on my own car: 1)From a Fram Doubleguard, I now use a K&N oil filter. I might try a PureOne next change. 2)I switched from Valvoline HM and Castrol GTX HM to Mobil 1.
But, I still use the K&N air filter because I feel there is not enough significant evidence or even opinion here against it. Plus, that thing was expensive! I may change back to an OEM filter sometime later, but not in the near future.
As for Valvoline Maxlife HM, I heard from this very forum that it was the best at stopping oil consumption and leaks. My experiences strongly support this in more than 2 cars. I think now that it's done it's job, I'll switch to Castrol GTX HM on the cars still running the Valvoline HM.
