So do batteries only last about a year in these things?

If your machine came with conventional then you cannot use AGM because the resistance in AGM is lower and will draw more current from your charging system which could overheat a regulator. And the higher current could potentially overheat the battery. Maybe that's why you've had bad luck with them.

As for trickle chargers, if you feel you must use one then put the charger on a timer to run once a day so it's not constantly dumping current in. Electrolysis causes water to split and vent out as H and O gas. I've read on wikipedia that the H gas can go right through the plastic case on AGMs, though most of it recombines back to water in sealed batteries.
Odyssey promotes their agm batteries big time for atvs and side by sides. I guess they dont care about the regulator on the machine?

Many ATVs come with AGMs from the factory so it depends on what machine you have.

Even though Yuasa issued the warning they still offer an AGM and a conventional for a 300 King Quad that came with conventional, so it may depend on how the battery is made. The conventional is 14ah and the AGM is 12ah, so the AGM is a bit less capacity and probably has higher resistance to match the regulator requirements. Regulators in that quad are very common failures.

So it's not that you can't replace a conventional with AGM, but you can't BLINDLY replace it without knowing what you are doing.

well I shouldn't have any issues now. This was all just an issue of the previous owner putting in the wrong size and type of battery, and I never actually verified what the correct battery was because at the time I was just in a hurry to go to the mud park, so it wasn't until the battery that I PUT into it went bad after a year that I started to look into it. The battery all my commercial lawn mowers is bigger than the battery above. they're like 325cca

Lawn mowers tend to have a lot of cc's so they need bigger batteries to crank it. I think my small lawn tractor is 750cc.

batteries can be damaged by heavy vibration and heavy bouncing
This.......

I had similar issues in the past. A cheap little battery tender fixed the issue. maybe 10 bucks at HF. Have had the same batteries for years now. Also, if no power is near your parking spot, they make solar chargers. I did a review on one a while back on this forum look it up, I do not know how to find it.

I have two 750cca batteries on my diesel trucks. No way they would put those on a mower

No, I asked what mowers you have.

Mine is a lawn tractor, 750cc twin Briggs making 22 hp and 42 inch cut. It came with a regular U1 flooded battery that's probably 250 CCA. An atv battery will not crank it. I have to manually turn the top of the mower to get past the compression so the battery can get some momentum going before it will start the engine.

I don't know... you said your mowers had bigger batteries than the battery "above" which I understood to mean the batteries I posted for the 280cc King Quad. I said that's because your mowers have bigger engines than the 280cc quad. You said "Not any of mine maybe an old riding lawn mower". It turns out your mowers do have bigger engines (481cc and 852cc actually) so I don't know what's going on here. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant by "battery above".

Anyway glad you got it figured out because I'm thoroughly confused lol

This question was regarding my polaris rzr side by side. The previous owner basically put a lawn mower battery in it. That was only like 400cca. The oem battery is like 600cca and weigh like 40 pounds unlike that little lawn mower battery that weighed like 15 pounds. Then throw an 800 watt sound system in the mix and it's no Bueno. I'm not sure where I threw in my lawn mower batteries into the mix, sorry for the confusion

Here I highlighted it. I thought you were surprised your mowers had bigger batteries than the 280cc quad I posted above your post. It made sense to me because I was surprised when I learned mowers had such big engines, especially a 42 inch plain ole lawn tractor.

I buy AGM batteries and keep a maintainer on them. They seem to last a long time. Snowmobile batteries have a tough life and I generally replace mine everything 3 years.

I just changed the battery in my parents 2005 Yamaha Kodiak last week.

It was the original battery from 2005 😳

It would still start it, but only barely

I can't believe it lasted that long when I've changed the battery in my Grizzly 550 twice in one year awhile back.

So it obviously varies on usage etc
