How are you all holding up, Tire-wise?

I'm still Impressed with my General Altimax Arctics.

My new Michelin Latitude Tours are doing great! Actually drove on ice on a hillside parking lot with them and only slid once. Great tires!

Quick question... On her car 185s or 195s? (So one groove or two in center of tire?)

Thanks, bill

I bought some new Goodyear Eagle Ultragrip GW-2 tires for my Grand Prix this year. They only come in one size that I'm aware of and seem to be targeted towards police vehicle use.

225/60VR16

Pros: Great traction in snow and plowing through slush at speed. Amazing handling/traction for a winter tire when wet or dry, much better than my all season GY Assurance Fuel Max tires even. They seem adequate on ice but probably not as good as the Blizzak WS-50s I had before.

Cons: Just adequate on ice. Horrible fuel economy. I have a Scanguage II and it is extremely accurate on my Grand Prix, usually with .1 to .2 mpg of my hand calculations. At a steady state 65 mph over several miles of road I drive every day and can repeat over and over I'll average 33mpg with my Assurance Fuel Max tires and only 29 with my Eagle Ultragrip GW-2 tires. My old worn out Potenza 950's and Blizzak WS-50's were around 32 mpg. We'll see if they get better as they wear in but with 3k miles on them I've seen no change. The Fuel Max tires were new last spring so this is comparing 2 new sets of tires.

Overall I love them. I've never been completely satisified with winter tires due to the loss in dry and especially wet weather traction compared to the tires I use in the summer. I've only bought Blizzak's before but always felt they were worth the tradeoffs for the superior snow/ice traction. I still feel they are worth it for my wagon which my wife drives. For my car however I prefer these performace winter tires. Expecially their ability to plow through unplowed slush and wet snow. If ever I might come close to losing control in the winter it is a situation where I'm forced into an unplowed area of the expressway due to another driver or simply quickly changing conditions in the lane I'm in. The very open directional tread design seems to work great. These tires seem to excell in those conditions. They also seem just as good as the Blizzaks in the snow and adequate on ice. They also give up nothing when the roads are clear other than a little more noise compared to most any tires I've tried in the summer (various performance all season tires). The cost of the tires and the poor fuel economy are definite negatives but for overall safety in the conditions I drive in they seem the perfect compromise for me.

First of all, thanks for that great write up you did when getting tires for your Corolla, that's what turned me on to the Pirellis

Funny you should ask about the center grooves, that was the reason I went with the 195s, I wanted two grooves for more wet traction because it rains (just a bit) around here. So far zero trouble, getting free rotations from DT.

How are the 185s working for you? With as much as you drive, you must have close to 50k on them by now.

They are working well. I've got 40-50k (don't have the exact number and too lazy to go look.. 4 hours sleep will do that to you

) (went to dedicated snows a few months ago so they are in the garage) and Drew was asking about them in a PM so I took a few photos.

And new tires vs old (just to see how much they have worn)

I like them! ALOT! Just bought new tires for the wife's Subaru and it was between P4 and Michelin Density. She picked the Michelins and so far okay. Personally I would have went with the P4s.

The P4s do work well in the rain and some snow I've used them in. The one groove seems to be okay.

Hopefully I get the 80k out of them.

Take care, Bill

I'm liking ours as well. BIG improvement over the BFG's.

Yeah, Better to take a hit in the wallet than ending up upside down in a ditch.

Interesting Tires, Too bad only in one size

I drove through a really bad snowstorm last week out here in Colorado. Back in Oct 2010, I had Yokahama Envigor's mounted. These tires did AWESOME. I was very pleased!

The BFG AT's on my F150 are outstanding. We've had about 4 feet of snow over roughly the past month. Never a slip or slide. They have awesome control on the highway during the snow, especially changing lanes / taking exit ramps with the plow mounds.

I drove my daughter's '89 Cherokee on 33" BFG Mud Terrains during one storm. They did great as well.

Just drive carefully to get where you're going and you'll be fine. There's too many trucks, 4x4's, and Subaru's flying around like it's some type of rally race. Although the last storm I drove past two 'Yota Camrys and a Civic without front bumpers on the side of the road.

My Continental Extreme Winter Contact's are having it easy this winter so to speak. It snows almost every day but they salt the roads to death so I seldom drive on pure snow/ice except on side streets and alleys.

I triggered the ABS only once in almost 12000 Km and that was coming a bit fast to a stop on heavy snow.

Tires are also very quiet on dry pavement and ride well.
