I saw that another brand of tires rated for snow is being recalled. I have Michelin Cross Climate tires with the snow logo that were recalled last year. I kept them as they are great in the rain and got me out of mud that I was sure I would be stuck in. What's the deal, Do they not meet government design specs, or fail to perform in snow? Seems like Europe would have higher standards than ours.

I like my CC2 tires as they have proven to be great in snow and actually an all around great performer for me. No gas mileage penalty either.

They do not pass the US version of the snow traction test. They do pass the European version, so it seems the US version is more difficult.
CC2's have a different formulation in US vs. EU, too.

So far I have run CC2's and PSAS4's from Michelin's line. LX20, LX25 from Continental's line. Now I am using Blizzak WS90 this winter, albeit on a FWD car, so I will see. I can tell you from all of the above, hands down, the best all around'er has been the CC2's. I just want maximum ice traction without studs this year. I also saw a test on Tirerack, studded tire vs not. I thought Studded would do better. Interesting data:

TR Synopsis:
General AltiMAX Arctic 12 (Studded)(Studdable Winter / Snow, 225/45R17 94T XL)
General AltiMAX Arctic 12

  • What We Liked:The strong ice braking is a nice improvement.
  • What We'd Improve:It's not that much better on the ice than the non-studded version. The road noise is intense. It's not legal for road use everywhere.
  • Conclusion:Invest in a good Studless Ice & Snow winter tire instead.

Note that the Blizzak WS90 stops significantly shorter on ice than the STUDDED cheap tire:
