What’s the deal, with snap on hard handle ratchets? Are they being discontinued?

Not many on their site, and on eBay the usual sellers are asking hefty premiums depending upon color and all. I’m not a huge fan of the soft grip on the ratchets. Ratcheting screwdriver, ok. But I like the hard handle for most other things…

Look at this kind of craziness.

I’m looking for the mid length 1/2 non-locking flex head with orange grip.

Can’t find it on their site at all. Should be SHFD80AO. Overpriced by $100 on eBay, not in the SO website, and at best they give $20 off. No thanks.

That's crazy money for what they are!

Does ICON offer some sort of hard handle that's comparable?

This whole ploy will backfire eventually.

It’s insanity the prices of SNAP on hand tools, it’s ridiculous. What people pay for these things, I know I’m gonna get bashed,,idc , but I have plenty of SNAP ON, Mac, Cornwell, Matco, craftsman and China made they’re all about the same.
I won’t support the Chinese war machine more than I have to.

For hand tools I don’t have to. And I like the SO ratchets. But they are expensive at their retail prices, which can be >$100 less than what these eBay sellers are asking.

I just want to buy for the retail price. Thing is, the products aren’t even showing up on their site so website currently.

Part number? Snap-on throttles their online/direct sales catalog in favor of all the franchises that need stock. Ratchets are one of the hottest items in Snap-on's catalog....And they make a lot more financing it at 22% interest!

The computer you’re typing on is made in China

I bought a couple of Snap On ratchets on eBay over the years and got good prices. Lately the sellers seem to be smoking crack. As it turns out I walked onto a local Snap On truck about two or so years ago and got some decent deals for cash. Way better than the prices the crack smoking clowns on eBay have been shooting for lately.

Zero interest in buying anything icon.
I am the same way, I avoid Chinese if I can but not Taiwan. Icon are good tools (not trying to convince you to go over to the dark side) but when you dig into it deeper it is well known a company called infar industrial co ltd in Taiwan is the manufacturer of the Icon tools and doing just a little research there are a lot of dirty little secrets in the tool manufacturing world.

FWIW HF is a USA company and has over 28,000 American workers and Snap on 13,200 worldwide but without sidetracking Infar also does business with Snap on, is it for Blue Point, Williams Taiwan of doing forging or finish work I have no idea, finding that out is like looking for the holy grail. I just don't want it said that that trav clown over on bitog is starting ugly rumors about Snap on. I don't need death threats. Infar also makes tools for TTI/Milwaukee, Carlyle and a bunch of others. SNA Europe is Snap on.

In my younger days I didn’t have a lot of sense I’m a little better now,😂 I purchased a snap on quarter inch drive ratchet with all the sockets the metric and american set, I think I paid 350 which is a lot of money being 20 years ago, now I think they’re 500 bucks it’s ridiculous would I do it again nope!

Have you considered buying a soft handle and doing a hard handle swap? I’ve done a couple and it’s not hard, I think I documented one of the swaps here somewhere.

I like to use the screwdriver handles since they are bigger which may or may not interest you.

Me too. They used to be a few bucks under retail, which was good enough for me given the convenience.

I’m not opposed to new-ish condition used tools, or even old stuff. I’m not in a rush. I’m more concerned if the hard handle itself was discontinued. I prefer soft grip for their ratcheting screwdrivers, but hard handle for their ratchets. That’s about the only SO I own besides some Williams USA sockets.

I would give Koken a try. They’re make a really nice ratchet at a good price point. I’ve got several and really like them.

Good idea as I don’t own one!

Koken are nice, just be aware the direction selector is backwards to Snappy, gearwdench, Matco, etc

Some don’t mind it, for me I can’t stand it.

I agree. They're nice tools, have very little back-drag, but they're a little bulky imo and not as strong as Snap On. I like Nepros too, but I don't think they offer anything with a hard handle. A little patience and chasing down a few Snap On trucks might pay off if time isn't a major concern.

That’s interesting. I want a mid length 1/2 for access and strength on bigger stuff. I have the orange hard handle SO 24” ratchet that I bought a few years ago and has been excellent. That’s why I’d like a match :)
