Smoke detector: FIXED!

Well, again, I feel like a complete idiot. If you've read the following thread, this is the follow-up thread.

Some of y'all said there was probably a backup battery in my smoke detector, so I put the ladder back up there and removed the whole thing from the ceiling. I saw a spot that appeared to be for a 9-volt battery, but no connector or old battery. I took the thing apart completely, but still no battery.

While I was doing all of this, I heard the chirping noise again.

Obviously this didn't make sense due to the fact that there was no source of power for the smoke detector. Well, after some investigation, I found a previously unknown CO2 detector on another wall in that hallway - I seldom go upstairs in my house. The detector was hidden from sight behind some shelves my wife put up when we bought the house almost three years ago.

I took the battery out and lo and behold the chirping stopped.

I think I'm going to nominate myself for the BITOG "Idiot of the Year" award. Will anyone second the motion?

Even standing on the ladder next to the smoke detector it sounded as if the chirping noise was coming from it. I couldn't believe it was coming from another source. Made me feel like a knucklehead! Oy vay!

Been there done that..

We have a gas stove. (used to have electric).

I own a CO detector (with digital readout).

I naturally located that bad boy in the kitchen (yeah I know, we have gas heating and water heater)

No, nada, zero CO detected. Promptly forgot about detector in the hubbub of life. After opening up three smoke detectors, I realized it was the CO detector in the kitchen that was chirping every 7.2683 minutes with a dieing battery.

I'll vouch for you, too, AstroVic. That chirping can be VERY difficult to locate. The first time I had that happen, it took me forever to figure out what was chirping.

Someone makes a little battery powered, randomly chirping circuit board that you can hide and drive someone nuts in this manner. Apparently the maddening principle is, er, "sound".
