Smoke Coming From Fill Tube

I received a phone call from my mom the other day, who was calling in shock because smoke was pouring out from her hood. I asked some questions, got some vague answers - but would appreciate anyone taking a swing at narrowing down the culprit.

This is a 2005 Nissan Sentra. 70k miles. I'd be willing to bet that the maintenance history is probably spotty.

Here is what I know. She popped the hood and the smoke appeared to be coming from the oil fill tube. I asked but she wasn't really certain on the color of the smoke, other than it smelled like burning oil. She also said she checked the oil and it was low...hhmph.

I apologize for the lack of detail, but thats all I got. She is not in a position where she can take it to a mechanic (long story financial and otherwise), and obviously can't drive it.

I've been racking my brain for ideas on what could cause smoke to come from the fill tube. I don't have anything concrete, and i know enough about engines to get in trouble. Any thoughts? I'd just appreciate it if we could get it narrowed down to 2-3 possible things... I'm guessing most will be spendy to fix.

Sounds like a leak at the oil fill tube. Perhaps some oil is running out there or possible from the valve cover seal. You'd be amazed how a small amount of oil can make a big mess and smell with smoke. I'd tell her to get the engine cleaned and check to see where the leak is. It has to be leaking oil because if she had that much blowby inside the engine it would hardly run.

I would check out the PCV system. It should be sucking these vapors out.

Could have a bad head gasket,
and/or a puked engine from lack of oil.
I'd have to see and smell the smoke in person.

Change the oil & filter and clean the PCV valve I hoses with some TB cleaner and see if it keeps doing it.
