Small Engine Oil Filter

I have three air-cooled engines with spin-on oil filters (15 HP Kawasaki on DR Brush Mower, 16 HP Koehler on Sears Mower and 20 HP Honda on portable sawmill). The price of the recommended OEM oil filters is rather steep for these engines. Could I safely substitute an automobile engine filter of the appropriate dimension? I know that there are quality differences from brand-to-brand, but are there operational differences which would create a problem switching from the OEM recommendation?

Yes, I use a PF53 equivalent filter in place of a Brigg 492932.

FYI. I have a 12.5 hp Kawasaki motor with a spin on filter and it crossed to a 51934 or is it 51394? WIX (which matched my car and motorcycle). I went to the wix site and looked it up.
