Small battery dating question

Hello,

Any idea how small batteries' date codes work? Any speculation on this Sanyo battery?

Note the code 90-04. Thoughts? These batteries were made in Japan.

Think it is the 90th day or '04, or the 4th month or batch or day of 1990?

The build date on the PCB is 12.90, so the battery certainly could have been made in April of 1990.

I have the battery off the circuit via jumper removal, OCV for each is 3.068 and 3.062. LiMnO2 batteries should have an OCV of about 3.3V, but operate down to 2.5V. At this OCV, Id be guessing they are from 1990, had little use, but aren't really capable of taking a load (though these are only for memory backup), and are marginal at best...

Thoughts?
 
By the by , electronic components are coded with year and week; i.e. 90-04 would be 4th week of 1990 , which is congruent with the PCB build date of 12-90. If I were to remove the batteries ,I'd snip the tabs so I could ease the leads out while I melted them, or barring that, cut the tab up high , punch a small hole and use it as a terminal for the battery holder lead. Use no larger than a 40 watt iron.

Well, first I would try and instill self confidence by quietly inserting comments like "size doesn't matter" and complementing the benefits of the "compact" design. That should break the ice. After that, you can see if it appears sensible for a LTR.
