GTX was the only 10w40 oil with the SM rating at the local Walmart. Pennzoil, Havoline, Valvoline, & Tropartic were all SL rated. One better than the other? I am using it in a 2003 Kia Sorento with 55,000 miles on it. The owners manual sez use 10w40 from 0 to over 100 degrees. 10w30 from 0 to 95 degrees. Thanks.

5* is enough to go up a grade?

I don't think 10w-40 SM really means anything. The specs, as prepared, basicly omit any grades other than 20s and 30s for the tough tests. All you get with SM 10w-40 SM is lowered add levels. iirc.
