Slightly more noise on Synth

OKay, I havent used a Synthetic or Semi Synthetic for a long time, say 50,000k's or so. Mainly using minerals and changing at 5000k's intervals. Cars done 200,000k's and started using Synpower 10W50. I have read some reports of ticking when changing to a synth, etc. I am getting some slightly more ticking at low speed from time to time. Only done 200km so far. At the end of the day its still a Group 3 so shouldn't be too different from the Group 2 and 1 oils i been using. I have also just finished my Auto-RX Clean and flush. Wanting to use the Synthetic to extend the drains from 5000k's to say 7500-8000k's. Also looking to progress down to a 5W40 as it gets cooler, right now in the hottest time in Oz. In a sense i feel im going backwards, using slightly thinner oils than i used to in the past.

Interesting. I can see a synthetic, of the same weight, causing more noise. Are you talking full synthetic or blend?

I'm actually thinking of going the opposite direction with conventional oil, of a heavier weight, as my vehicle gets older. I wouldn't expect tolerances to be the same at 100K miles as they were from the factory. The conventional oil will encourage me to do frequent oil changes and save on cost as I think I'm getting to the point where buying a new vehicle will save me more time and money than to constantly keep up with my current one.

Yes, Synpower is Full Synthetic Group 3. If i dont have any luck, i will stick to using Delvac MX 15W40 all round. It and Delo are the only minerals i pretty much trust not being a Group 1 oil. In Australia, too much Group 1 still being used. Problem is it is still blended with Synthetic base and sold at a premium. Most people on here say not to use full group 1 oils etc. Delvac and Delo seem to be the only consistent oils being Group 2 and above in that weight.

I have found that I get more mechanical noise with PP for about 2 OCI's then it seems to abate. Try running one brand for several OCI's and see what happens.

The wife's Tahoe with the 5.3 is noticeably louder with Synpower than dino PZL

After trying several different synthetics and dinos is various cars,I prefer dino over synthetic in the engine. But,in the gears I prefer synthetic. Engines seem smoother,quieter,and more responsive with good dinos,but manual transmission definitely performs better with synthetics. I`ll always run dino in the engine and synthetics in the transmission and diff.

For instance I tried Synpower in my gf`s Olds 88 (I usually run their Premuim Conventional) and it was noticably more sluggish with their Synpower over their dino. Both oils being the same weight,10W30. Out of all the oils I`ve tried in my car,Valvoline conventional and Pennzoil Conventional yb have impressed me the most performance wise (acceleration smoothness and responsiveness,wot runs,cold weather starts,cold statups after the car had sat work times longer than a week or so,and just the way the engine performs in general).

So even though a Group 3 is still conventional based, it can still have different characteristics over a group 1 and 2 ? I will let it run its course, i dont think it can damage anything....then i need to start searching for a good conventional oil. I wanted to be able to increase my oil change intervals. Like i previously mentioned, not too many good quality conventionals in Australia. Most are GRoup 1 with those being SM rated having some Synthetic base added to it.

I would call group 3 a premium conventional, to borrow from one manufacturer. If good/better/best rating for dino, it's the best dino. If compared to actual syn group 3 is good-better range, depending on additives, especially above 40deg. Group compared to 1 and 2, has much less waxes, so much better low temp flow numbers. Also much better nock mumbers.

Oil actually starting to improve now after a couple days.... will be having 38 and 40+ degrees centigrade in the next few days will be good to see it in stop start and freeway traffic while i commute.

I agree. My truck runs smoother on YB than any other oil including synthetics. I'm going with 4K OCI's and a decent filter for now on.
