Hey everyone, im fairly new to BITOG and im liking it here. Quick question, I have a 2000 Honda Accord with a slight oil leak around the transmission which leads to be the rear main seal going bad. The oil leak is very minor so my question is should I go to a thicker oil weight like 5w-40 or 10w-40? Or should I use something like Valvoline Maxlife?

Thanks.

I would try a high mileage oil in the spec recommended for your honda e.g. Pennzoil High Mileage 5 or 10w-30. Honda's are very particular to thin oils; I would stay away from a 40 weigh if I were you.

By the way,

rotella t6 5w40 or Maxlife 10w40 would be my choice. EDIT: 10w30 QS high mileage may work well too, depending on your climate

Perfect case in which to try an HM oil. The RMS is really expensive to replace...oil is cheap.

Just make sure your PCV system is working correctly...if the engine isn't venting the blowby...you'll get spurious leaks...

We have the same engine in our '99.
Contrary to what someone else posted, the engine is not at all picky about oil grade.
I've done three 5K runs of M1 15W-50 in ours in warm weather, and it seemes perfectly fine.
In Florida, any grade oil would be okay year 'round
Anyway, pull the PCV valve out of the valve cover, and shake it to see whether it's free.
If it is, you should hear it rattle.
If not, replace it.
Look down the hose, too, and see whether it's clogged.
If not, replace it.
If the PCV system seems functional, try something like Maxlife 5W-30.
This may help you with the rear main leak.
Another possibility is to pull the transaxle and replace the rear main seal.
I wouldn't really want to either, but that would fix your problem.
It would be cheap, in terms of parts, but a lot of work to do.

PCV valve was replaced about 5k miles ago.

As mentioned above, my PCV valve was replaced about 5k miles ago. Probably going to end up with Maxlife.

Does the car have a manual or auto tranny? I'd just be worried to get contamination on the clutch disc. Like suggested you could try a high mileage blend oil and see if that stops/slows the leak. Just watch it and make sure it doesn't turn into a larger leak.

Its an automatic.

Its the rear main seal.

Maxlife HM 5W30 or even the Mobil 1 HM oil would work fine in your car. It could take a few thousand miles for your leak to stop, if it does...

MaxLife would be a good pick and if you go to Valvoline web page alas you will see a Mail In Rebate on the Next Gen version. Alot cheaper than the rear seal. IMHO
