While reading about the new Chevy R07 NASCAR engine, I ran across this article with some interesting oil info on page 3 of the article. Shell oil is a team sponsor of Richard Childress Racing.

This paragraph caught my eye;

"RCR uses 0w-30-weight oil without a restrictor plate, and 0w-20-weight during restrictor plate racing. A fresh filter and oil are always used before a Sunday race. The R07 engine contains six gallons of oil within the dry-sump system (two more quarts than the SB2). During break-in procedures, RCR uses Rotella T 10w30-weight oil for its high zinc content." (Quote from Rick Mann, Chief Engine Builder at RCR)

The article also states, "Special synthetic formulations are blended specifically for RCR according to feedback from the team on areas of concern. Main components within the blend include wear and friction modifiers. Formulations can be changed and ready within one week. RCR currently uses a synthetic blend containing 75-80 percent base stock."

Hope this isn't old news to everyone... I thought it pretty interesting!

Great article thanks!. I read somewhere before that one of the Nascar teams used a 16 qt sump.

Endurance race car oil systems are in that range.

i had never even thought about it until i seen this thread

You have to think though, that it's a dry sump system and the engine is turning 8,000 + rpm for several hours. By the end of a race, I bet it's got half the oil left in the system, maybe even less!

the sumps on those cars are huge. theyre sold on ebay a lot. they are located behind the drivers seat. im gonna use the same setup when i build my track car.

The actual tank isn't huge by any means, but I'd bet there's at least a gallon just in the oil lines and the various oil pumps that facilitate the dry sump system. The oil lines they use are massive by passenger car standards.

So if you put this thing on your car, add remote dual filters and fill it with Amsoil, could you go 5 years or 100k mile oci's?
Minds wandering.
