That's an old trick. Buy a carton of OEM disks, and the vendor throws in a $2 mouse to make it "kosher".

Where it works, going academic is better than OEM. Besides the transfer issues, a lot of OEM versions are de-contented.

Here Microsoft spends a ton of money to fight piracy of their software with stupid "Activate now" things built into their software which is supported by call centers of people and authentication servers drawing power to authenticate people installing the software and activating over the web, but they won't sell people a cheap disc that is pretty much retail package free instead?

Sounds kinda stupid to me... Maybe Rick Wagner form GM set this up for them.

The real money is in corporate license. If they make it tough then loosen it for students, they can have excuses to act tough for the deep pocket.

I have yet to find a clear, binding definition of what constitutes a System Builder. I have built dozens of computers, so I can call myself a system builder. Microsoft sells OEM software to direct System Builders, but direct System Builders can resell the OEM software to "System Builders" as long as the software is sealed or installed on a new computer. Many shades of gray....
