Simplicity Hydrostatic Drive problem

I have a Simplicity Model 5212.5H riding mower that I have owned for ~ 20yrs. At the start of mowing season this year, the mower will not move. I discovered the refill for the hydrostatic fluid was empty. After adding fluid the mower will still not move. However, you can push it around freely, even though the transmission lever (under seat) is engaged. It 'acts' as though it is disengaged.
Any ideas appreciated.

Sounds like the bypass is stuck on the transaxle. I know on my Cub Cadet 2544, the bypass lever simply mashes a paddle against a spring loaded button on the trans housing that opens an internal check valve. Sounds like it's stuck on yours. You could also have air in the system witch would require you to pull the bypass, start the tractor and cycle the forward and reverse pedal/handle to purge.

Thanks Joel, It does have the same symptom as the bypass lever being shifted. I believe it pushes a button, just as you speak of, on the front of the trans housing as well on mine. I'll try your suggestions and let you know.

Kman, basically what I do if the bypass sticks is work the button with your hand as you rock the machine for/aft. It should free up if that's what it is.

I'll try that when I get off work. However, I know the button is 'popping' back out because I looked at what the lever is pushing on the transmission. I saw that the button did come back out when the lever was pushed to 'engage'.
