This is really starting to get attention, in spite of the fact it has been going on since 1988. The Silver State Classic Challenge is held every year in the state of Nevada. They close down a 90+ mile stretch of Nevada State Route 318 between Lund and Hiko Nevada, and race on it.

The link below describes the event in much more detail. The video below shows a modified Nascar Cup car hitting 249 MPH on part of it. Remember, for the most part, this is a 2 lane state highway, not a prepared racing surface. Cars of all types and classes compete.

Wow! 150 mph in 3rd gear short shifting. Would be interesting to know the transmission and diff gearing.

Does Big Red still hold the record?

No.

The current record holder(s) in the unlimited class are Bob Allyn and David Bauer at 219.643 mph average speed. They used a former NASCAR racecar.

Here's a video of the previous record holder in the unlimited class, the late Jim Peruto, passing by one of the checkpoints, also in a former NASCAR racecar. His average speed was 217.557 mph. His top speed was over 250 mph.

Love the sound of an unrestricted V8 turning 9k+ RPM.
