Sienna: can she use these 225 on 235 size van

I have a question about these tire sizes. My GF had a Sienna that got totaled like a week after she bought new tires. She was able to take the new ones off and have old tires put back on. She bought another Sienna but apparently it has a different tire size.

Can these old tires be used on the new van? Would she need new rims if this is possible?

Old Tire Size: P225/60R17

Tire size for current van according to a tire search with online site. She hasn't gone to look at actual time bc she's at work.

P235/60R17

I was prompted to ask by the other mini van thread about premature wear. It reminded me that she needs to replace her tires soon. Thank you

Thats only 1/4" shorter so speedo will be off a small percentage.

check the door placard on the van compare to the load rating of tires.

Okay I'll mention that to her. I'll have her send me a pic later of the door placard and tires.

I think I inadvertently put the wrong size on my old Taurus in 2019. I never knew my speedometer was off on it until I started using Waze and noticed the speed on that is off 2 MPH. With my other car, the speedometer matches what Waze says is my speed.

What year and trim level is the new van?
Here's more info.
The original van was 2008 Toyota Sienna LE AWD.

New Van is 2011 sienna le

The tires from the receipt that she wants to put on the new van are

General Altima RT45
225/60R17

This is from the receipt which I found. These tires have just been sitting in her garage since October.

She took a pic of the tire but I couldn't see the size in the pic but found a receipt she had sent me before.

Just get a set of 235's. Minivans are hard on tires, and Siennas are even harder on them :sneaky:

There are some inexpensive all-weather tires out there, so even if they wear out quickly, it's ok since they're so cheap :D

She has these tires sitting in the garage from when the other van was totaled in October and would like to use these rather than waste them if that's possible.

Do the tires on the newer Sienna need replacing? I would use the 225s you already have waiting on deck
Yes. The newer Sienna is close to needing new tires. She'd like to save money and use those 225s if they fit on the rim. Obviously we can tell they are close in size. So can she just have a tire place put the 225 Generals sitting in her garage on the current rims that have 235s that are nearing minimum tread or would she have to buy new rims too?

This might sound like a noob question but I'm not trolling. Not sure if that's possible or not to use current rims for that tire size difference.

Just to be clear, the 225 General Altimax from the old van are sitting on her garage with no rims: they are not currently mounted. The only rims she has are the ones on the new Sienna with 235 tires that are nearing wear indicator bars.

Thanks.

They'll fit, you won't need new wheels. Tire sizes (and treadwear ratings) have a little bit of inconsistency. One 235/60/r17 for one brand may physically measure out differently than the same size tire from another brand.

You'll want to set your tire pressure to 30psi on the 235's to get the same weight load rating based on this calculator

The speedo will be off 1-2 mph.

The LE trim of the 2011 Toyota Sienna should have P235/60-17 tires on OE 17" diameter by 7" wide rims. If so, the P225/60-17 General Altimax tires will fit on the 7" wide rims. The new tires will be 10mm narrower in width and slightly shorter in diameter. The speedometer will read ~1.7% higher than actual vehicle speed. Here is a Tire Conversion Speed Calculator.

This is a terrible idea. The van is already under tired, and this would make it worse.

Try selling the tires on eBay and get new tires at the local tire shop.
How does one define "under tired" Honest question because I am thinking of taking my Rav4 from 235/55/19 to 225/75/16, mostly to protect my expensive dental work.

And yes the 16's will fit over the brakes, etc, I already have that size on a steel rim for a spare and have run it both front and back without issue. Its 0.1 inches taller in diameter per spec. The lower level trims on this car come with a 225/65/17 if that adds anything to the discussion.

2011 is when Toyota started specing 235/17s, but unknown for the change other than to get some load rating boost because they still use a 7" wide wheel. Thats puzzling since the max recommended tire width for a 7" wheel is usually 225mm. A 225/60 on a 7" wide wheel is fine, but is the max recommended width for that narrow of a wheel. However, with the speedo correction (nominal) in mind, it should cause no issue.

The original tires on my Kia were sized 235/60/16 (rated at 100H) but the owner's manual stated that I could use 215/65/16 tires (rated at 98H) so that's what I bought at the next tire purchase. I would use the 225s on the Sienna with no worries. They are very close to the 235's physical size. The load index for the tires are also close enough. Earlier today I was viewing another poster here on BITOG give advice to inflate tires 6 psi higher in a van than what the door placard recommends, for better handling and tire life.

"under tired" is mostly about load carrying capacity. In the case of the Sienna, it seems like the original tires are barely adequate and larger tires would fix the tire wear issues.

In your case, a 225/75R16 is what Tire Rack says is equivalent to the 19's you have now.

225/65R17 usually has the same load rating as a 235/60R17, and are super common and cheaper. Used sets of good brands should be very common too, perhaps already on rims that fit the van on facebook. Or at the local used tire place if you want to save a few hundred bucks.

You have RAV4, not Sienna.
Sienna is BUS on the underpinnings of Camry. It struggles everywhere, in the braking department, in the handling department etc. 235/60 R17 is the absolute minimum. I ran that size in winter on steel wheels. In summer, I ran 235/55 R18. It is behaving much better on 18" wheels.

I understand this, but my question is still unanswered. How do you define "under tired".

Clearly bus needs more tires than bicycle. Is there some way to define this or is it just tribal knowledge?

Maybe I put in lift and run 33's to be safe :ROFLMAO:
