Should I worry about synthetic causing leaks?

I am 16, have a 2007 Honda CR-V which is my first car that has over 200,000 miles and I have already done one oil change on it and after driving a lot this summer between vacation and work and summer school I am coming close to my next OC.

I do not know what the previous owner of the car used for oil changes, but when I got the car it had a Valvoline sticker in the window that said "5W20MXB" which I assume means the Maxlife Blend.

The oil I am currently using in the car (what I put in when I changed it) is Super S Multi-Flo 5W20 synthetic blend I got on clearance at KMart.

I have read tons of horror stories of people switching to synthetic oil and having their engine basically grenade because it was held together with sludge that the synthetic removed and it all would leak out.

I have had no oil leaking or burning problems running synthetic blend so I shouldn't have any problems running full synthetic then, right?

I am asking because I have always been curious about Royal Purple products and I want to try their oil at least just once to see what it's all about

so if I have the "green light" to go ahead and bump up to full synthetic from syn-blend then next OC I'll give it a shot. Still figured I would confirm here first. Thanks!

Synthetics causing leaks is a myth. Poor maintenance and overfilling the crankcase is what causes leaks.

Sorta like how Pennzoil causes sludge or Fram oil filters cause engines to seize up, it's all a myth. BITOG has dismissed all those wives tales! Lol

You should have no problem with full synthetic. Running royal purple in a 200K mile Honda CRV is kind of ridiculous but if you have the green go ahead. Trust me you will not see or feel any difference in engine performance or longevity. The Purple is just a dye that fades away about half way through the OCI. It turns to regular oil color as its being used. Where did the purple go???.....

I might recommend a high mileage formula to condition your seals and hold off the leaks you are talking about.

For that car and if your driving isn't too crazy hitting the redline often, any low cost synthetic from walmart would be fine.

You can get Pennzoil platimum for $22/5qt jug at walmart then a $10 rebate making it $12. Cheaper the Supertech. (which is also a good oil by the way)

I would go that direction.

I have always been curious about Royal Purple products since I was little

I just wanted to try it just once, and because of cost its going to be a 1-time thing anyways.

Maybe even bumping it up to a 5w30 full synthetic or high mileage synthetic. The royal purple is a waste in my opinion, ive tried their oils and I didn't gain 100hp or anything

Big myth, as mentioned though a high mileage oil wouldn't hurt.

Save your coin brother there's no need or real world benefit of RP oil. Mobil 1 Castrol Edge Valvoline Synthetic all great oils.

If you give RP a try the satisfy your curiosity, make sure you run it tonight for at least 10,000 miles to get your money's worth.

What oil filter are you planning on using?

It's your money and vehicle. Do what makes u happy. I concur about using a high mileage synthetic oil. Life is short. Enjoy and let us know how you like it. Have you considered an oil analysis?

I believe the oil change light on this car has a 10K limit or 15K anyway, so if I go off the computer I should be fine but I will still watch the odometer. Also I will probably use a Fram Tough Guard.

I have not considered an oil analysis. The vehicle has complete service records, there are logs in my glovebox from the PO of everything from oil changes to tire rotations to even topping off fluids, and too much more to list. Would an oil analysis give me any more info in addition to what I already have/know?

Again thanks for your input y'all and I'm not as weary to try full synthetic as I was. When I do try it out I'll report back if I notice any differences.

One of the reasons that synthetic oils got the stigma of causing leaks was that on much older engines (like from the 60s or 70s) they used a different gasket material that didn't "play nice" with the PAO/ester base oils in synthetic oils, so soon after people starting using synthetics on those older engines they developed a leak.

Fast forward to today and a lot of the synthetic oils are made of a group 3 base oil anyhow, so they wouldn't have that same issue, even if used on those older engine designs.
