This is going to be a bit of a mouthful. At my last oil change (Ford 4.6), I decided to use Liqui-Moly Pro-Line Engine Flush. I changed the oil as usual, added a can of MoS2 and a can of Motor Oil Saver in case I had any leaks. The sealing effects of Motor Oil Saver take place during the first 800 km (500 miles) after you add the product.
Roughly 2,000 km (1,250 miles) into the oil change, my valve cover gaskets started weeping a bit of oil. Nothing major, but still enough to bother me. The passenger side cover is weeping where it crosses over to the timing cover. The driver's side cover is leaking from the bottom bolt that is tightened to the timing cover.
I'm not considering replacing the gaskets just yet, as I plan on replacing the actual valve covers. My oil fill is on the driver's side, which is also where the air intake tube is. As I'm going to be modifying my air box and tube, the new tube will run right over the oil fill. So I will be replacing the valve covers to move the oil fill to the passenger side.
The leak is somewhat bothering me, and as it stands I've got two choices in the mean time. I have quite a big stash of oil, all of which are full synthetics. I can either use one of those, and add Motor Oil Saver, hoping it will seal the leaks within 500 miles. Or I can go with a high mileage oil.
Unfortunately, there are no synthetic high mileage oils available. In fact, the only two available are Pennzoil High Mileage 10w30 in a caramel bottle, and Quaker State High Mileage Vehicle Engine 10w30 in a red bottle. I wouldn't mind using either at all, being a big fan of Shell products. The Pennzoil is SM rated, the QS does not have an API rating as previously discussed on the boards.
Now that that is all out the way, my three questions are:
1. Should I go with the usual full synthetic and add Motor Oil Saver?
2. Would HM oils be able to swell leaking/weeping valve cover gaskets?
3. If the answer to the previous question is yes, which product should I go for (Pennzoil or QS)?
Thanks!
