This happened to me in one of the nastiest Harbor Freight bathrooms you could imagine.

It wasn't the handle exactly, but the mechanism and chain in the tank.

I could tell I wasn't the first one to fix it. So, ironically without tools, and pants at my ankles, like that bathroom scene from Dumb and Dumber, I'm frantically trying to fix a janky toilet before my wife freaks out where I've disappeared to.

I remember signs in stores saying that when we had a drought way back in the mid '70s. Nobody could afford $4 crisis gas to go to the store anyway.

Me too. I remember Los Angeles County sent out to every residence, a list of ways to conserve water. Using water from cooking potatoes, pasta, etc., to water household plants. Use bathwater for multiple baths. Share a shower with someone else. And several others. But of course the most memorable is the two line jingle about flushing the toilet.
