Time to put on new shocks on my 03 Ranger XLT 4.0.

I need something good for rough roads, But not really a HD Off-Road shock.....Any Recommendations?

Thanks

Never Tried Bilsteins on a Ranger, I know they are Good and somewhat stiff usually, I had them on some older Saabs.

Some of the roads I drive on can best be explained as "Corrugated", and I want to keep my Fillings.....

Any clues as how the Bilsteins would deal with that?

Thanks Again!

No problems with my Monroe Reflex on my F series. They're a bit more firm than the OEM shocks but have held up fine. Got em for a good price too because rock auto was having a close out price on them.

The roads here in MA can pass for WWII tank traps.
The bilsteins have a nice ride, firm but not overly so and very well controlled, your hat wont be down over your ears when you hit a bump.

Back when my 2002 F-150 4X4 had 5,000 miles on it in 2002 I replaced the soft seemingly useless factory shocks with Rancho RSX's. So far they held up well under all sorts of roads & loads. From what I understand the Monroe Reflex shocks were basically the RSX's without the paint & boot, at a cheaper price. Not sure whether that's accurate or not. No leaks on mine but they rusted heavily, especially the rears. But then I park on a stone driveway that has water under it all the time

If his truck is 2WD, Rancho doesn't make a shock for it. Rancho doesn't have any that fit SLA coil spring suspension Rangers. They do make shocks that fit torsion bar and the old Twin I Beam/Twin Traction Beam Rangers.

Bilstein is the way to go. Not the cheapest by far, but if you shop around online you can find deals.

Monroes are okay, but go for the more expensive ones. I cheaped out on the Ranger and put Monroe Gas Matics on it...stupid. The ride is a little better, but it looks like one is leaking already. It does have a lifetime warranty, I have just been lazy about replacing it. I had Sensa-Tracs on my Explorer and they rode better.

Other good brands to consider for this application are KYB and Edelbrock. You'll pay a small fortune for the Edelbrock's though, so you may as well go with Bilstein.

Definitely stay away from Gabriel shocks. When I was 16 I put a set of $18/shock Gabriels on my old Ranger - mistake. The bushing actually managed to slide off one and it started bouncing around on the control arm.

Another vote for the Bilsteins. I had a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 that I replaced the factory shocks with Bilsteins. It made the ride firmer but I wouldn't say it was bumpier. It was my brother that originally recommended the Bilsteins to me. He had replaced the factory shocks on his Nissan early with Bilsteins to just get a better feeling of control.

My Tundra Rock Warrior comes from the factory with Bilsteins. If it didn't, I very likely would have replaced them. The Toyota dealership told me that they keep Bilseins in stock because it's one of the asked for upgrades.

If is as durable as the Bilstein adjustable shock on my 20 years old BMW R100GS motorcycle, they will last forever. No leaks on mine and the damping adjuster still makes a difference you can feel.

the bilstiens on my tahoe are oem....so they are dumbed down a bit from the yellow hd's....but they just now feel soft after 190k, and they don't even leak.....getting a set of hd's this summer

I say Bilsteins too. I have The Heavy Duty model on my Mercedes. Works great. Definitely can take some hard hits and rough driving and keep on going strong.

check out partsgeek.com for prices. Compare and shop around until you find a good price on it.

Has anyone used KYB Gas A Just shocks on a Ranger or similar truck? They are about half the price of Bilsteins....

This would be for a 2wd on road truck.

Bad experience here with ultra heavy duty KYB's on real trucks.

Bilsteins are some of the best.

If you're on a budget check out Gabriel Ultra. Amazon is super cheap!
