Shipping Gone Wild

Went to a US post office to pick up a package on my way home from work on a Friday. I could see it on the shelf behind the lady at the desk. It was a half hour before their posted closing time and I was the only customer there. The lady would not give me the package. I was told that it was too near closing time and the system had already been shut down. There was nothing I could say that would convince the lady to hand me the package. She did not show the slightest interest in helping me. She sat down, plugged in her earbuds while holding her smartphone. I guess I got stuck dealing with a person that was far more important than me. I had to come back on Monday to pick up that same package.

Now I know that when one picks up a package from the US post office one should be there before the lunch break to ensure a good chance of getting the package.

or just report her to the Postmaster of that post office. She's lazy and was lying to you.
 
UPS and FedEx need to come back down to reality with their shipping prices. I could see their prices being up a bit when fuel was really expensive, but fuel prices have been low for quite a while now and their shipping prices should reflect that. Package tracking is far better with UPS and FedEx as compared to the USPS, but it isn't worth 4-5 times more. I will put up with USPS' deficiencies to avoid paying the ridiculous costs by the other two...
 
It's going to get interesting. The shipping business is going to grow and the biggest guy on the block is going to win. I don't see any relief in sight for individuals.

Yeah, just call up the postmaster general. They investigate things like this. At one point I wasn't getting any Saturday mail. I called them up asking what the problem was and they looked into it and then I started getting mail again on Saturday. Not sure if the previous guy was just skipping his shift.

FWIW I've also shipped 2 jugs of oil recently. One went to forum member here, 4L jug of Spectro Platinum which was a regional ship about 300 miles the other to the east coast 1100 miles, jug of Silkolene Pro 4. Both under $20. $11.04 for the Spectro and $16 and change for the Silkolene, both by fedex. Hence why I was niave enough to just take the two panniers (hard bags) from the bike to the fedex terminal and expected to ship for a reasonable rate, without getting online first and trying to figure it up. Thought, well the oil shipped reasonably @ 9lbs each, so I'll just use fedex again for the panniers since they're only 11 lbs each just larger boxes.

When I got home, went on fedex.com and ran the two panniers by dimensions and weight zip code to zip code. Same.
