Many employees have had to work odd shifts to keep their country/business running 24/7. Tell us if you have did shift work and what they were.

I have worked 5p-3a, 9p-7a, 11p-7a and day shifts 7a-5p.

I have always preferred night shift, even if the hours are longer. It's when my body wants to operate. I never need alarms and generally feel better than when I'm on days.

I'm working 9/80 from 0600 - 1530 now, but I'll be back on my 7x 12hr grind soon.

I have worked every shift under the sun. 8am-4pm, 4pm-12am, 12am-8am, And then rotating and relief shifts. On call, For the past 12 years I work 6:30-3pm. I love my current working hours.

Not any more , but when I was a young pup , I worked all of the shift . I was single , so it was not that big of a deal .

All shifts, depending on the job. I did grave, 12 AM to 9 AM for 4 years when I went back to college; after work I drove to school. Thought I was used to it. Then I found sleeping when it was dark outside was really easy...

Worked pretty much all of them. 15:30- midnight was my favorite when the kids were pre-schoolers. Overnights were the pits. Day shift had too many mgrs

Previous job: employer did not care about the staff.
Typical week was:
M 8-5, on call until 8a
T 8-5
W 8-5 oncall until 8a
Th 8-5
F 8-5, on call until 8a on Monday.
Lather rinse repeat.
Worst was out for 36 hours, leaving Friday am, returning Saturday.
I put up with it for 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days.

Which explains current job.
Currently 1p-10p M_F, on call one weekend a month, 12 on 12 off.

As an Officer with Miami-Dade County Police...
12a-8am, 11p-7am, 10p-6am
*4p-12am, 3p-11pm
6a-2pm, 7a-3pm

Unequivocally, the *afternoon's were where all the action was. Not midnights as is often believed.

Worked 1600-0230 for 4 our of the 5 years I’ve been at my current job. About the only thing better about night shift was that I got more sleep (I work 0600-1630 now and it’s near impossible to get to sleep by 2115 to ensure a solid 7 hrs sleep, since I have to get up at 0415 to be at work before 6).

Previous job was all over the place. Monday's we typically had to be at the shop by 5:45a to drive 2.5-3 hours to our location, then work the rest of the week 8:30a to whenever (we would stay in hotels during the week, ugh). Friday we would try and leave an hour or two early to get back home at somewhat of a decent hour, not always worked like that. Sometimes I worked a building 1.25hrs away and would leave my house at 6a and got home around 4:30ish. We were on call during the week, so we could get called out at any hour of the night/day. After three years of that, I was done.

Now I work 2nd shift in a plant (2:30p to 11p) and I've actually come to love it. Not to mention coming home every night has been a plus.

As a firefighter for the city i live in we worked 24 hr shifts. 7am to 7am the next day. We worked a 9 day cycle that went like

Monday went in at 7am got off at 7am Tuesday

Tuesday off.

Wednesday work 24

Thursday off

Friday work 24

Saturday off
Sunday off
Monday off
Tuesday off
Wednesday start all over working 3 out of 5 and then 4 off.

I loved working this way (retired now). Averaging 20 days of month off enables plenty of golf time. Additionally we had the ability to trade time with someone on another shift of the same rank so by trading one day that could get you 6 days straight off but that also meant working 72 hours straight.

Semiconductor plant as maintenance. 12 hour night shift, 7pm to 7am 4 days on 4 off. Finally got on days, 7am to 7 pm.

This use to be my weekend when I was in college....played drums at a club from 9-2am, then the club needed a cleaner/night watch man from 0300 to 1000. In college, band gig wasn't paying all that much, so I did that for a summer. It was literally an open air bar right on the beach and they couldn't lock it down so someone had to around and do security. It was pretty cool job until one night I actually feel asleep inside the bar, someone had got into the back room and picked up the money safe and walked out with it. Boss was not happy and I quit. No police report or anything, just settled in house and only 2 people knew about it. About a month later, former boss came up to me one night at another club we were playing at and said my ex girlfriend told him "I heard you got your safe stolen." I didn't tell anyone because it was embarrassing as you know what, and the same for him, he didn't tell or report anything either. She knew my schedule and knew I'd probably crash out at some point in the night. Oh well......

Wendy's 11-1 then 5-7 worked 5 days a week.
moved on to other jobs....

Worked 11-7am for a while.

worked 4pm to 2am, then shift changed to 3pm to 11pm, then got seniority and moved to day shift, 7am to 3pm.

No stupid swing shifts!

During college I'd start my days of classes/work at 7am and finish at 10:30pm. Those were exhausting. During the summers I worked two jobs. The first was 7:30am to 4pm and the second was 4:30-10pm.

Now I work 7:30am - 3:30pm most days and run a business on weekends.
