There are several TSB's for that year make and model regarding power train issues. Check with a dealer for a recall, or service procedure. My sister in law has one of these vans. Rock reliable, but has had a CEL for the last 3 years with trans faults that several visits to the dealer have not resolved. Hers clunks into reverse, shifts hard on 1-2 also. There was a valve body recall done, but no help. Good luck.

any suggestions to explain a hard 1-2 shift for a 97 astro van(4 spd auto).this only occurs after sustained high speed driving of around 50 miles or more.

search around the internet for 4l60e and slipping TCC apply.

the tcc slips when applying lockup. this makes heat, which thins out the atf (which makes the trans slip more). the ecm (computer) will command full line pressure to make up for the slipping and you get a very harsh 1-2 shift (until you restart the engine).
