I have a bunch of shell rotella-t 5w40 in my garage. I have an 07 silverado 5.3l engine with 12k miles on it. Would it be ok to use up this oil, the manual calls for 5w30?? Thanks in advance.

Use it and enjoy. That's fine oil!

Well, you could, but it's certainly not necessary being you have a modern V8 with roller valvetrain; and such low miles too. There's an outside chance you might take a hit in fuel mileage; that's something to consider with today's fuel prices.

With only 12,000 miles on the clock, I wouldn't go thicker than HM 10W-30.

I want to stay with the 5 weight as it can get cold here in CT. I was wondering more for the 40 weight. I realize the MPG may take a hit.

My gut feeling tells me that the Rotella won't hurt anything; but it may not be the optimal oil for your application though.

I used it in my S10 with the 4.3. it was OK. Didnt see the need based upon research and UOA. It is a great oil for my BMW...

It is good oil though. Certainly useful in the summer if doing towing or high-stress stuff.

Actually, MANY who own 5.3 engines are running the 5W40 and are getting good UOAs. I don't think you'll notice a mpg hit in your V-8. Now if it was a 4-banger you probably would notice some sluggishness.

The rotella 5w40 is on the thin side of a 40 weight, I wouldn't worry about it and run it, it is a very good oil for the price.

02zx9r,

Not looking to pick a fight or split hairs, but the Rotella 5W-40 doesn't strike me as on the thin side. At 100 deg C the kinetic viscosity is 15 cSt. This compares favorably with HDEO 15w40s such as Delo (15.7), Rotella (15.5), Castrol Tection (14.9), and Mobil 1 TDT (14.9). Then there are the PCMO 5W-40s, all of which are lower; e.g., Valvoline Synpower (14.5), QS Q HP (13.1) and Pz Plat (14.5).

I certainly agree with you about not worrying about using it in just about anything--it's almost a universal motor oil. And the price is right.

I guess i stll have more to learn then. I just looked at the SUS 210 degree chart and saw it was near the low side. Not afraid to admit if i am wrong.

No worries!
