First, I should have welcomed you to the site. You've stepped into a demention that few survive with any sanity or clarity!

As for your question, Well, that depends ...
on the mechanical health of the engine including cooling system, fuel system, lube system, previous mistakes like overheating, etc., etc.
on how you drive it (short, long, medium trips, hard, easy ...)
on the time of year (weather conditions)
on the loctation of operation (high dust areas, high sea moisture, yada, yada, yada ...)
It's difficult to give you an answer when we know nothing of the operating conditions. For example, I run Rotella in my Duramax, but also my Kubota. I don't use one maintenance schedule to predict the other. Each operates in it's own environment, under different conditions.

Your comment of "not looking to max the oil just extend" makes me wonder just how many miles are you doing now? And how far is "extend"ing without "max"ing?

So, at the risk of being a smart-@$$, I'll suggest you run it to Toyota's recommended OCI limit (regular or severe, your choice), then do a used oil analysis with TBN.

If you don't want a generic asnwer, don't ask a generic question. As Jerry McGuire said in the movie "HELP ME HELP YOU!"

ahh IC, see i new in MA near the water, i do 40/60 city/highway driving and in the city i dont hit the engine hard truck has 72k runs mind but i just hate to do oil changes every 3k im running mobil 1 at 5 k right now and i knew a few people on other sites that do 8-10 k with that oil and was wondering if rotella could be compared in durability as mobil 1. but reguardles that you do your answer i will be getting a analysis done :)

Any good synthetic sould be able to go 5k no problem. Obviously this is assuming proper engine conditions.

At 5k to 7k with M1 Id pull a used oil analysis to see how much life it has left.

airborne - there are used oil analysis for your perusal in the Diesel section. That oil is fairly popular in the older model TDI community. I've used it and like it in my diesel, gasser dunno.
Try it and post a used oil analysis!

airborne, you don't specify which Mobil 1 you were considering. There is the regular Mobil 1 synthetic, the Extended Performance Mobil 1, and the Mobil Delvac 1.

I would think that in a small truck (it's a gasser, right?), you could run Rotella T synthetic with a comparable range to the regular Mobil 1 to get started, then see how far out a used oil analysis would allow you to go. The upside to the RTS is that, while not a "synthetic" in the same vane as the Mobil products, it still produces tremendous support from excellent used oil analysis. In fact, I think it's kind of the sleeper product in diesel oils. You can find it at any Walmart for about $17/gallon. You'll pay way more than that for the Mobil products.

I would even question why you want a 5w-40 weight in a gasser engine anyway. Why not try the Mobil 1 Extended Performance (in 5w30 perhaps), and run it out to 15k miles or 1 year, used oil analysis not withstanding?

BTW, your apparent disdane for changing oil is only going infuriate some around here who simply cannot resist at least 5 OCI's per year, all on different oils, along with used oil analysis, for the sake of "science". BITOG'ers are by nature, a curious and incessantly fiddling lot who can't leave well enough alone, myself included!

I plan I going back to Rotella Syn the next oil change. My truck posted an excellent UOA with it. I plan on 6 month used oil analysis and change it when the TBN is due. Excellent stuff IMO and you can't go wrong.
