Shell Helix / Mobil 1

Now Boxster, you are just being to logical. Some think it produces to much iron and others are mad because when they contact Mobil they won't tell them exactly how they make it.

Hang around, it won't take long to figure it out. I notified Doug about this thread so I hope he jumps in here with his thoughts.

I read a lot of "UOA:s" here and they are interesting
but there has to be major differnces in engine counstructions
and materials in regards to the Oil lab results instead of inferior oils ?

The suspicion is that M1 cheaps out on their 5w30, 10w30, and possibly even their 5w20 knowing that more knowledgeable people would also not be afraid to use 0w30, 0w40, their EP and ESP line or 0w20 for the 5w20 crowd.

Now when I say cheap out, I don't mean the oil is bad. It's more like making it good or decent rather than excellent or outstanding (like what Johnny said of the 0w40)

My friend has used M1 5-30 in his 2000 Taurus with 8-10,000 mile OCIs. The engine has 310,000 miles and still runs great and is very clean through the oil fill oil. Another friend has 260,000 miles on his 99 Silverado with 10-17,000 mile OCIs and the engine still is fine all on regular M1 5-30. My sons 91 Ranger has 340,000 miles on M1 10-30 with 10-14,000 miles OCIs, again very clean through the oil fill hole.

Exactly the same,

but they are very similar.

Shell Rotella T will never be VW approved. I repeat the oil was originally designed and made for the HDEO market (18-wheelers, bull dozers, etc.) It does meet API SM gasoline specs and is considered a mixed fleet oil. If the viscosity fits you can use it in a gasoline engine.

Speaking of VW approved, there are not to many PCMO in the US market that are VW approved. What are you using now in your VW?

I am thinking of using it but it is not VW approved.

Very similar to the Delo 400. The Delo400 is geared for commercial usage they don't market the oil for shelves space competing against other marketing oil...reason cost money to advertise and it sells to slow not worth it. Their bulk is selling 50 gallon drums very similar to the Rotella. The Rotella is thrown out there on shelves space for free advertisement.

Currently Castrol Edge 0w-40. Next fill Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40.
Previous Castrol Syntec 5w-40.
I know for a fact some people are using Rotella T on these engines ( 4.2 FSI)

Oh, I'm sure a lot of folks use the Rotella T 5W-40, as a matter of fact I know two VW owners, one gas engine and one diesel that use it. Both have had great success with. But as stated, it is not VW approved.

Now, those oils you mentioned above are VW approved and if you want that approval I suggest you stick with one of them. They are all excellent oils. Just curious, where are you getting the Shell Helix Ultra? And, where did you get Castrol Edge 0W-40?

I go there once a year, shipping is actually cheaper than the oil itself.
Only in the US is oil less than $10 a litre.
In Australia Audi uses Longlife III 5w30 oil for virtually all of their cars (Diesel and Petrol) and charge almost $ Aus 40 a litre.
The VW 504/507 Castrol equivalent is not marketed in Australia. Oil change by the dealership for an Audi RS4 runs at almost $ Aus 600.
