Bought a 55 G drum of the synthetic oil in 2008. It is laying on its side on a stand, and I take 5 qts out every 3-4 months. I have a valve installed and crack open the top to vent it and drain out what I need. After searching the shelf life issue, I am starting to worry that maybe I should be rolling it around the floor before I drain some out. Then someone else says to ship it to them to use, so from a technical standpoint, should I be rolling and sloshing it around before draining out my 5 qts or invite the neighbors over for an oil change. Any comments?

Having dealt with ag chemicals in horizontal drums for years, I would suggest simply tilting the stand to fully upright position, then tilt back down to horizontal.

This of course won't be equivalent to vigorously shaking a quart bottle up, but will indeed give most of the mixing effect. Once up then back down should be easy to do, and the drum won't have to be detached from the stand (like for rolling around).

I had a drum of ATF that after about 2 years seemed to take on a lot of water. Is that normal? I'm guessing it just sucked it in from humidity in the air?

Depends on where it is stored. If it is in a heated building and the drum is sealed there should not be a water problem. If it is in an unheated building/garage then condensation can happen.

IF it's not exposed to raped temp changes and stays fairly consistent no condensation should form,we keep many barrels of lubes in the shop for the tractors/trucks and no issues, any way you can move it or slosh it around would be a good thing.
