Sorry if this has been asked before--did a search but no luck.

I have 2 oem oil filter for my '99 VW Passat that I bought back in 2003. Was wondering if they are still good or if the paper or whatever in the filter might degrade over time.

I think 11 years is pushing it some. I think most filter manufactures say 5 or 6 years max.

I thought Motorking said 8 years? Either way it wouldn't concern me for a normal oci, but if i was trying to push it i would worry. Just use them for shorter changes.

I still have 3 Honda PCX-004 oil filter for 2004 S2000 I bought around 2004-2005, I plan to use those filters the next 3 years. They are shrink wrapped and kept in garage closet with temperature range of 50-85F, I think they are good for more than 10 years.

I agree with the Mobil site -- as long as it wasn't stored in a sauna, the lifespan should be almost indefinite.

Will the metal parts on the inside of the canister filter rust with being several years old ?

Mobil 1 is a premium filter with a synthetic fiber blend. The advice applies specifically to Mobil 1 oil filters.

+1 AS long as there is no rust on the canister, the components of the oil filter can do just fine sitting in a properly controlled environment. (Those components being filter media/paper, steel, and rubbering for a ADBV.)

I have 4 Wix made "Big A auto parts" Filters built in 97 that any of you stating that age shouldn't matter are free to take off my hands.
forget the exact part #(except that the WIX part Number is old enough to have been replaced...), but it crosses to a puro 14476/14477.
(fits many Toyota/GM apps)

was looking for some wix filters for the Vibe, and RockAuto listed these under WIX as a "private Label Closeout" for less than $2 each. bought all 5 they had left, cut one open when i found out how old they were.
never expected them to be nearly old enough to vote...

I wouldn't go more than 5 years. The seam sealant is probably the weakest link and will get brittle and I wouldn't trust it. I would discard any filters older than that.

With temperature and humidity controlled storage, they should be fine.
Left out in a Chicago garage subject to the variation in temperature and humidity over the past decade, maybe not.
They probably are okay.
Cut one open to gauge condition.
If okay, run the other.

Since I have a stash of 34 filters for my four cars, now I'm supposed to shorten my change intervals or throw out some filters if they get too old? Heck no. I'll take my chances storing them in a closed cabinet in an insulated but not climate controlled garage. And we gets some humidity in NC. If my 1970's Wolfs Head 5 gallon can has almost no rust, I'm not worried about a 5-6 year old filter taking a dump.
