Set the brake

That stunt would land the owner in jail down under.

Although the police DO get a better deal on negligence than the unwashed plebs.

They asked the same queston. How did the dog hit the brake pedal and pull the gear shift at the same time

It must have been in neutral, as the car rolled forward. Plus every shifter I know has detents, and it takes a combination of side forces and downward force to navigate the shifer from park. I think something was lost in the translation, as is usually the case with journalists.

Depending on one built in safety is a real good way to get hurt. Betting a life on it in a 4000+ pound vehicle is dumb as it gets. Leaving a vehicle running with only a dog or a kid in it has never been a good idea. How many times have a situation like this made the news over the years? About two weeks ago around here a Mother left the vehicle running with her child in the car while she went in to visit a friend. Some how the kid got it in reverse, when it started moving the child opened up the door to get out. Vehicle ran over and killed the child. If for no other reason the cop should be fired for no common sense.

OT: I drive the I-95 corridor along the Connecticut coast virtually every day. This is 1 of 2 routes to "the rest of New England" from the south For those not familiar with the area, it appears all of NY city and NJ goes down this road Saturday morning in the summer.

It amazes me the number of passengers who have their feet on the windshield while asleep or up on the dash. One little fender bender (good liklihood) and it is a kneecap sandwich.

No matter what you do to protect people from themselves, they will always find a way to hurt themselves.

I see that all the time also! People just don't seem to think about the end result as it has no effect on them at the current moment. BTW, this dog story sounds very fishy. That is quite an amazing dog to push the brake pedal and pull a shifter w/o opposable thumbs!

Wonder if they delete the brake-transaxle interlock as part of a "cop package". For a long time they rigged it so if you slammed the shifter into low, the transmission would only go down to "2".

The old Crown Vic I drove had the anti-theft feature. It could be disabled. Also, many officers leave their vehicles in neutral with the e-brake on as it is much faster to shift into drive that way if they have to leave in a hurry. When you shift out of neutral, it automatically disengages the e-brake.

Who's got a 99 F150 to check and see if it has the same feature (neutral->drive automatically disengages the e-brake) as the Crown Vic? This would make sense.
