If the old server died because it hit its limit due to software - I'm assuming we are pretty close to the new server's software limit? I don't know too much about these things but I always thought it was dependent on the server (hardware) and not software.
Either way, one could probably go through a lot of the older posts and delete the ones that never got any replies or are just irrelevant/got locked out. That would probably free up a ton of space if that is an issue.
