Selling a car

Am tempted to do that, get earplugs, or grow some hair and deal. I actually kinda like it, it forced me on the drives to behave.

Have not ruled out very well used. No rush either way.

Upshot to dealing with yet another loan is getting something I might be able to hand down to the kids in eight years or so. I fear my son won't drive stick, but I suspect my daughter would.

Anyhow, off topic. On topic: I did agree to pick him up at the airport. Five minute drive for me, so it was not an issue. I did not think about the plate issue when I did that; ten minute drive to the DMV though.
 
I live in NH and selling a car means a simple slip of paper stating as is sale of VIN # with no warranty from to. You also sign the rear of title over as there are boxes there.

I only accept cash or if bank check go with buyer to bank to make sure check is cashable and bank typically notorize(bonus) the bill of sale.

I pull plates and let them figure that out. Typically the car stays parked at end of driveway/edge of property locked by new owner and no longer my problem.

My coworker just traded his Jetta diesel and his Liberty Diesel for a 2015 GMC Canyon quad cab 4x4. I could find out where he traded it and the miles on it.

The problem with this is it's still not always "real-time" and the bank "has to" cash it even if they can't tell it's good. And darn if they won't come after you if you use your ID to cash it. And the forgers know all the loopholes.

Let the buyer cash it, or sit on it yourself an ungodly long time before releasing the paperwork.

Nah, that is ok, I am done with VW. Well, for now anyhow. Another decade and maybe I will change my mind, who knows.

My boss plans on getting a diesel Colorado, so I will be curious how that pans out.

You have to be so careful though. A relative of mine sold his old Olds Ciera to a ghetto dweller. The dweller continued driving it with my relatives long expired registration sticker on the w/s and got into a minor accident. Who do you think got sued?


As a buyer I am fine with that, as a seller, no. Although if local, I might drive the car myself to his house, pull the plates and get a ride home.
 
$100s should be legit, besides, you have the serial number of both the bills and the car the guy's going to have to put in his name.

The big thing is not letting him escape with the "buyer" portion of the title blank. Then if he flips it he at least has to touch base with the state.

Have you looked at 08-11 Focuses? Until I put in the polyurethane dogbone mount, I couldn't hear anything other than tire noise at 65-70MPH. No buzziness.

Now, it's not as bad as as Corolla ... even with the poly mount.
 
No I have not looked at Focuses. I ought to take a look.
 
Temp plates:

This is really a minefield of uncertainty.. reason is, State X couldn't care less what the laws are in your home state or the state you are picking up from. There is a big Chevrolet/Corvette dealer in NH that has to keep reminding people that Massachusetts does not allow/recognize temporary plates. At all. Then in many states only the dealers get the ability to issue a temp plate. Florida is like that, as far as I know, which is a bummer because I'm always eyeing low mileage rust free "senior citizen" owned cars there...
 
^ and what's funny is, in 1910 or so the states worked out reciprocal registration agreements, letting folks drive on their home state plates across country so long as they were valid.

The vague, yet million dollar question is, if Massachusetts doesn't have a category for temporary plate, how can they honor a foreign one?

Even funnier, foreign states might not call cardboard plates "registrations" but rather "in transit permits" or similar. You'd think with 100 years of doing this they'd hammer out the details by now.

I'm chagrined that MA can bully NH to the extent that apparently NH dealers won't issue temp tags to MA residents.

Transmission gearing is my only major complaint. But it's pretty quiet. I'm guessing since you will be driving a lot of highway miles, 1st gear won't be a problem.

The NH dealers will issue them to any of their in or out or state buyers... the buyer just runs the risk of running afoul of MA law, if driving in MA, whether an MA resident or not. MA doesn't recognize any state's temp/in-transit plate.
 
Forgot one detail. What do you do with receipts? I have a small stack, unfortunately not every one. I keep the little one separate, like what you get from Walmart; but kept all 8.5x11 papers in a folder. Some have my current address on them; many have my name.

Hand over with no worries?
 
Look through them and make sure there isn't too many personal details. If there is then get out the scissors and cut it off.
