Hello,

So I have had a series of break ins and hit and runs on my parked vehicles at 2 different residences in the last 12 months and needless to say its getting old. I had been planning getting a camera system when I put up my new garage in the spring but I have decided that I want to move ahead now. I cant say that I am very knowledgeable on the technology but I am not oblivious either.

I am wondering what is out there, I am looking for a 120V system, I know there are ones that use memory cards and some are wifi based. I do have a wireless router at home that is always on but I don’t want to leave a computer on always. I know there are some systems which download to the cloud but I don’t want to get stuck paying a monthly fee either to a security company. I also know some systems are motion activated, our security system at work records 100% of the time but also has markers that show when there is motion in the camera, is that kind of technology available in the lower end stuff? I am not looking to spend $1000+ now, maybe later when I build the new garage though and can hard build it into the garage structure.

What options are there out there and what do people recommend?

Put some motion activated flood lights on the property as well. Should help the cameras operate but also scare the thugs away hopefully.

The best cameras I have found (IP based) are made by Axis. Many cameras are little more than toys.

Outdoor cameras are a lot more expensive than indoor due to the extreme variations in light and weather.

If you compare camera systems always look at the playback not live. Live could be great, but its compressed so much when recorded, that playback looks poor.

I put together a system for my boat club using Axis IP based cameras and a dedicated laptop.
