i have a 1952 30-06 760 gamemaster and id like to get it set up for 200/300 yards

i was wondering if anyone had a good suggestion for a budget "build"

i truly dont know much about scopes so im looking for advice. i know the punch a 3006 makes will kinda predict the scope quality.

suggestions?

You're going to need an eye relief of 4 to 6 inches. A good scope would be something like the Redfield Revolution 3x9x40mm with Redfield mounting hardware.

What's your budget?

A Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 will cost about $150 and the 4-12x40 is $200. Below that is Bushnell; above is Leupold.

Either way, use a steel base and rings, not aluminum. I like the Leupond rings.

Maybe. My old gunsmith said that he noticed more scopes losing zero with aluminum rings. I've been using the steel Leupold variety since then. They seem very sturdy.

i have grown fond of the see through mounts so i was wondering if the frame style nature would be weak in aluminum.

Nothing wrong with quality aluminum rings. I have Talley Lightweights on my Kimber Montana .338 Federal (.308 Win necked to .338)

If the Talleys will hold up on a 5lb 2oz. rifle they'll hold up fine on a 760.

My 1976 760 has an old Bushnell 4x on it. Personally,I find the 4x plenty on deer and elk out to 300yds.

I'll agree with the Nikon Pro-staff. They're a great scope for the money. I have one on my Tikka T3

The eye relief for this scope is under 4 inches. It just might not work on a Gamemaster 760.

I'm. It sure of your budget, by I personally favour falcon optics. Optical quality rivals Leupold and Zeiss, but the main Advantage is having the reticule in the first focal plane, so your plotted trajectory vs mildots remains the same at very magnification. Nifty.

I would suggest 1 piece Talley. I have them on a lot of different rifle calibers. Some on Rem 700 and some on Stiller actions. The larges caliber I have these on is 338RUM. Your 30-06 will be just fine with them under recoil. Even if 223, a good idea to blue locktight your bases. It's not just heavy recoil that can loosen screws, vibrations as well.

There is absolutely no necessity for steel bases. Steel is good for precision milled rings and matching sets, for sniper or loooong rage work. Save the weight and the dollars for this application!

i do believe ill go with these. now since they seem light by nature and maaaaaaaaybe a titch weaker, i think ill grab a set of steel rings.

i have to be honest, im realizing for my purpose ill be doing a lot of coyote hunting and plinking fun. atleast for several years till i can get time off for hunting outside my back yard

is there a cheap scope in the $100 range or so ?maybe even less? im all for better quality for a few bucks more

You might be able to get a Bushnell Banner for $100. I found the clarity in the Nikon Prostaff to be significantly better though. Stop by a store that has both and have a look at them.

I haven't really kept up with scopes in recent times, but I never cared to use aluminum mounts/rings on a high powered rifle. I have some of the old Redfield steel mounts/rings where on the rings the allen screw comes in from the bottom=just asthetics I spose, but mighty purdy compared to looking at them up top.

I BOUGHT a cheap bushnell 4/12/40 and rings for $128. in a future time ill go better but i see the next few years slaughtering coyotes. i just dont think i can get away long enough to go hunting out of town

I have a Redfield Revolution and Leupold mounts on my model 700 .270. Seems to be a good combo. My grandpa has a Nikon Prostaff on his .243 and it is nice and clear as well. I think either scope is an excellent option in the $150-200 price range. I've had cheaper scopes that I wouldn't call junk but they just have not been as clear as these two.
