Of course you'll see these numbers change a little higher or lower as each batch will vary a little but this should give you an idea of what the base oil looks like.
 
Interesting to note the silicon content. So, if I get back an analysis report that has 20 ppm of silicon I assume that I can subtract 10 as good silicon and assume the balance is dirt? A fair assumption?
 
That would be how it works, but consider some part of the silicon would be depleting as well as some of the other additives over a period of time depending on the extent of the drain.
 
The silicon is added to some oils as an anti foaming additive, yes?

I really wouldn't worry about the 15W40 diesel oils having too much zinc. They have cut back along with the other SL approved oils and now have 1.5% maximum. I think some have even cut back more than that.

I wish this wasn't the case because I'm currently using Delo 400 15W40 in all my lawn & garden equipment and I'm concerned with wear when these are operated for long periods of time after sitting for months or a year (say a generator, after a storm when the power is knocked out). I'll take all the zinc and moly I can get in those ... but for store-bought oils, I'm afraid that isn't all that much.

For 7.50 wholesale, schaeffers provides every thing but tbn. there is an additional charge for tbns which normally is done for diesels and not gas engines. In this case, they did not. sorry

Definetely the best bargain out there. I just ordered 3 more.

Personally, I feel that other factors will lead you to replace the oil, even if the TBN is not there. At least in every case I've seen, a low TBN will not be the only red flag.
 
Spector, you are correct on the Silicon extrapolation except that the difference could be dirt or other leaching etc.
 
I prefer to interpret other lab results( handling costs are high) and the Schaeffer kit is a good one (less TBN). Check my add on this site for the price and contact info if you really want to understand what the #'s mean.

I would have to question the accuracy of this data. The Schaeffers 5w30/10w-30 are API licensed formulations, according to the API website, so phosphorus is capped @ 1000 ppm.

So why does your baseline data show approx 1400 ppm for each of these formulations??? That's not even close to meeting the API limits ....

Ted, You got me, As I have no idea. Might be a batch error, lab error, I don't really know. I never thought about it as it is their problem/job to maintain consistancy and meet requirments which they appear to have done.

I'm thinking that this is the older sj version she gave me back then, I'll have to research and verify. I myself go with amsoils point of higher levels of zddp isn't much of a concern imo for cats. only for engines burning oil FWIW.
 
I think Schaeffer must've reformulated since this sample, because my recent used oil analysis on the 5w30 shows values that are completely different than this. Calcium, zinc and phosphorus on my used oil analysis are half the value shown here. My moly is much lower too, I've never seen over 100ppm on any of my used oil analysis.

Maybe someone could send in a new sample for VOA? Does anyone have any of those $8 sample kits they might want to use for this?

I am not sure of the 5/10 W oils but the 15W40 numbers are right on. I just got a used analysis on this oil and the Phos, Zinc and Calcium were real close. So if anyone does an analysis, don't bother with the 15W40. This is with the CI rated Schaeffer's oil.

Did you use schaeffers #950 or #919
