Schaeffer's oil is it worth the cost?

I have been running conventional oils (Chevron and Wolf Head) for years and never have had any problems. About two years ago I swithced to ENI/AGIP because their Synthetic oil is as cheap as Wolfs Head conventional oil. $3.90/qt for 5w30.

Most of the heavy equipment I have ran for the last 30 years has had AGIP oil in it so this is not a Brand question.

Does the Moly in Schaeffers make enough difference in economy or even wear to make it worth the extra cost of going up to $7/qt?

Any and all opinions on Schaeffers is welcome.

Need more info. What is the application, driving style, etc.?
I don't think it's going to make a difference to justify the cost.

My Golf is a great application for Schaeffer 9000 5w40 and once you can actually get it, it's one of the more modestly priced synthetics. Not $3.90/quart cheap, but less than the name brand synthetic oils.

Not all vehicles would be worth the added cost, so more information as Zaedock mentioned would be very useful.

I bought 7 cases (6 gallon containers) of the 7000 15w40 CI-4 + to run in my diesel truck that I have when they were clearing out some inventory to make room for the CJ-4. I sold a couple of cases to recoup some of the cost which came out to approx. $15.00 per gallon. It is a very good oil if you can find out at a reasonable cost but you need to ask yourself is this a need or just a want. I have learned quite a bit from the forums here and the wealth of knowledge that is here. DNewton , Jim Allen , Doug Hillary . SalesRep and Tired Trucker just to name a few members have shared their wonderful insight. Conventional oils today are pretty and so depending on what your maintenance plain that might be all that need. I have to admit it is quite fun to shop around at different auto parts stores and sometimes online at Amazon when they are running sales. Ex: Napa sale Valvoline Premium Blue Semi synthetic 10w30 for $11.99 per gallon back in November or the sale of Rotella T5 10w30 for $15.99 with $5.00 off limit per two coupons per household back in Oct 2013. This past Dec 2013 Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 at $12.99 GALLON (50% OFF).

I have been extremely impressed with Schaeffer Oil; it is definitely worth the $7 a quart. It does an amazing job on extended OCI. So I would say 'yes' you will recover the extra cost from fuel and maintenance costs.

I too say yes on Schaeffer Oil. According to the PQIA Test Results it surprisingly a better oil than Castrol Edge and Valvoline SYN
Power.

Well, cost is how you get it. I get my Schaeffer at wholesale. I get a lot of bulk stuff, but I also got recently a case of their 9003D dexos 5w30 full synthetic. Was about $67 for the case as best I recall. That comes to roughly $5.58 a quart. Jeff if you were to get hit for $7 a quart, you need to get another rep.

Could be because I use a lot of the Schaeffer products in my business stuff, that I get the wholesale price. Not sure. I know from the git go, that my rep has given me wholesale pricing, and I get free shipping of my orders. I do know, to get the free shipping, the order must be $375 or more. My orders usually exceed $1000. If nothing else, find a few folks to go in on a order that exceeds the $375 threshold, or check with a rep in your area and see if you can get what you need included with one of his commercial account orders. I combine some smaller orders from friends occasionally in my business orders and so they also get the wholesale price and free shipping.

Yes, if you are paying $7/qt, you are paying too much. Schaeffers is not for everyone. As was explained above, many folks find the minimum $375 for a wholesale order is too much, but it gives you free shipping, which other companies like Amsoil never do. Even so, I find Schaeffers is a fine oil, along with their greases, penetro, and chain lube, etc. and never disappoints. Find a rep and see what he will do. Some stocking reps will sell by the case at wholesale price and work with you, especially if you throw them a lead or two.

Better yet, contact "salesrep" here. He has always worked really well with me.

IMO there are oils that are just as good or better on the local shelves for less.
Moly is not the be all and end all, it is just one component of a complex additive package.

I think anyone buying lubricants based on a single aspect of the oil be it high VI, Moly, NOAK, TBN, thinner, thicker, etc is only fooling themselves.
While these may be of some importance in the package they certainly don't automatically make the oil better or worse.

We have always had that issue here. People forget that with oil 1 + 1 can equal 3 if the synergism is there in the add pack.

It does not mean one particular ingredient is everything...

Agreed. Unless one particular oil does something special for your engine like consistently better fuel economy, etc, then wouldn't make it worth the effort and expense of seeking out an oil like schaeffers. The biggest issue is being able to accurately quantify the improvements that one is seeking since no oil seems to be twice as good as market equivalents in any area such as wear control, cleanliness, or fuel economy. If an oil rectifies an issue your equipment is having, the I can see the point. Some people just like overkill or that feelgood factor, or hqve money to burn. I like Schaeffers and use it, but there are other good products out there and I use them too. Schaeffers is not severly overpriced like some premium products. I am of the opinion they present a good value for me.

I'm waiting for them to come out with a 0W-xx grade oils. I don't think they'll be doing it anytime soon though for a number of reasons.

I don't think it's worth the extra money unless you plan to buy it in large quantities to offset shipping costs. You also need to run a longer interval or it's just wasted money.

PYB + LM MOS2 will get you a healthy dose of moly if that's what you're looking for... Most NAPA's have the MOS2, or you can order it from amazon and get free shipping if you buy 3 doses.

As far as more info. 6 cyl ford p/u driving 16 miles one way to work and everywhere else gets about 20K per year. 4cyl escort that runs 30 miles one way to work at hiway speeds for around 15K.302 explorer that only does about 7k per year "look good ride".

The fella that put me onto Schaeffers claims he is getting an extra 4mpg in his S-10. I have tried other miracles in a can and not once did I ever get their billing.

I do know of several guys that run Schaeffer in a high performance diesel tractor pulling engine and have really good luck. One has run the same set of mains for 6 years in an IH DT466. Pretty good I think, for a 150hp engine designed to run 2750rpm that now has 1200hp at 4500rpm.

Given those applications, I recommend saving some coin and going with over the counter SOPUS or Mobil products.

Don't believe everything you hear. No motor oil can improve mileage that much except Synlube.

That sound extreme, say the S10 got 20mpg thats a 20% improvement.
I can see that if he used a moly based penetrating oil to free his frozen hand brake cables. JK

Manufacturers are going thinner and jumping through hoops to get a very small improvement and he get 20% with just changing to an oil with moly? Naw.

Probably going to stick with ENI/AGIP synthetics and Wolf Head dinos.
