Has Schaeffer changed their formulation? I just had a VOA run at Blackstone on a new bottle of Schaeffer 7000 series 5W30 and here are the numbers they reported: Everything listed 0 except the following: This is the API SM version.

Molybdenum 146
Boron 7
Silicon 4
Sodium 3
Calcium 978
Magnesium 3
Phosphorus 452
Zinc 517
TBN 7.4

This shows a big difference in Moly, Calcium, Phos, and Zinc from previous reports that I've seen.

Johnny if these numbers are correct Super Tech from Walmart has a much better additive pack than Schaeffers. I find it funny that the uninformed on this site bash Valvoline for a weak additive pack ... Valvoline blows this stuff away.

THAT just looks like a(nother) BAD analysis from Blackstone. I know I sound like a broken record on that one...

I normaly do not put much stock in any VOA, but these numbers are just way off from what I've seen on other reports. And, if these numbers are that for off, then I have a problem with who ran them.

Salesrep: Do you have a VOA that either Schaeffer or another lab might have run.

Also, did you shake the bottle before you poured the sample into the sample bottle?
What was the SUS, FP and insolubles?

Yes, I mixed the bottle. This is new oil, there were no insolubles. The vis was SUS 59.0 and the flashpoint was 415.

I emailed Blackstone and got the following reply:

You know, when I wrote that report yesterday I noticed the numbers seemed low, but I thought maybe Schaeffer's had gone to a lighter additive package. Unfortunately, the oil was dumped yesterday by a new employee who didn't know any better. If you'd like, you can send in another sample and we will run it at no charge, and give you a credit for the $2.00 it costs to send in the sample (your next sample will cost $2 less). I'm sorry about this. Sometimes the spectrometer does read low, when it needs to be calibrated. That's the only reason I can think of that the numbers might be off.

Hopefully, you have enough left to take them up on their offer. It sounds like a mistake was made by a new employee or calibration of equipment. I recently sent a UOA sample to Blackstone and one to Terry. Both labs came back with similar numbers on wear, additives, viscosity, water and insolubles. The critical discrepancy was related to fuel and flashpoint. Two different methods. One is better IMO.
This shouldn't affect what you are trying to do with a VOA though.

They got the TBN pretty dang close. 5w30 TBN of 7.5

You are to be commended for not taking one VOA and assuming it was correct. Perhaps Blackstone has alot of problems with accuracy based on their response.
My rep also said that Schaeffer had not changed any formulation of the 7000 series. The VOA concerned me as I have almost a dozen customers that have been running the 7000 series out to 10K based on UOA's done nearly two years ago. I
