Scan tool that will turn of AFM 2016 GMC 5.3

Will these devices actually reduce the failure of the lifters? I don't see how. For towing I do see the advantage of being in V-8 mode all the time. But I don't understand how it can prevent a litter mechanical failure.

The most common failure of AFM lifters is Locking Pin wear which can cause them to stay collapsed. Turning off the AFM will prevent this failure.

Roller bearing failure can still happen, But it's also a possibility on Non-AFM lifters as well. We had a rash of lifter failures in the '05 & '06 LSx engines, Most being GMT800 5.3L's without AFM.

Range AFM disabler in my '11 5.3 Tahoe. In at 35k miles, now at 114k miles. Zero issues. MPG dropped about 1 mpg avg. over that span. IMO cheap trade off for not having to do motor surgery. Full synth. oils only since getting it with 35k miles.

I have herd on some trucks if you plug in a trailer plug adapter in it won't go down to 4 cyl.

One of the guys on SilveradoSierra forum also found the plastic lifter tray has been a weak point as well, letting the lifters turn in place slightly. :/

The lifters collapse on themselves when not in use. Switching back and forth into AFM is what causes wear and then the lifters stay collapsed when failing.

Got a wee bit left on warranty … but with all the shortages of things these days - decided to order the Range disabler
(2017 5.3L) while available and still +/- $200 … I‘m coming up on 52K …

Maybe just check out the Range AFM disabler. Plugs into your obd connector. I have one on my 2019
Silverado and it disables DFM and auto shutoff. Works great and also works on AFM.
I had one on my 2018 LTZ 6.2 8-speed and while it didn't quell all of the 8-speed craziness, it helped dramatically. The truck was traded and the range unit now has a new home, too.
