scan tool for 2009+ bmw's

Anyone know if this scan tool will read codes from a modern bmw (2009-2010) ?

for whatever reason, my current obd-ii reader cannot read from my bmw. it connects, but gives me a read error. the tool i have does worth with toyota/ford/infiniti cars (2002-2005).

I am surprised, I thought all OBD 2 readers would work on all cars!

It should, being OBD2. But for that price, or close to it, you can get a BMW specific tool.

Check ebay for generic ones that should also work. My Dad picked one up for around $25 shipped. It seems to work fine, and is a quick and easy way to reset codes.

The add says that it works with european cars. Probly just do the easy generic codes.

The tool trucks all have a special reader for the Volvo's, BMW,Mercedes cars since they are a little different tha the USA and Japanese cars.

It maybe able to read common generic codes it but it probably wont be able to reset the CEL.Try it before you buy.

Autoenginuity has a decent low cost software based solution that will read generic common and many BMW specific drive train and ABS codes and can reset the CEL.It will not read body control.headlight module,park distance control,rain control etc.

Most after market scanners do not work well with BMW,the only exception being the unit from Autologic that duplicates OEM but this has a very hefty price tag,unless you work on BMW cars and use it almost daily its way to expensive.

Bavarian Technics is the best scan tool out there for new BMWs, from what Ive seen.

The reason many OBD-II readers don't work with newer cars is because the newer cars are using CAN-BUS communications. Starting at about 2007 I believe ALL cars use this form of data transfer.

I have a Actron CP9145 which I've had for several years. As I started fooling with newer and newer cars my reader stopped communicating with the cars computers. I bought updated circuitry for $65.00 from Actron and replaced the circuit board in my reader so that it now works with all CAN-BUS cars.

If you have a old code reader that doesn't do data logging then it is probably the most cost efficient method to just buy a newer modern reader.

Bingo I have GM specific Scanner which does real time engine function and can read transmission DTC's as well. Works awesome on my 98 Buick and 00 Trans Am, won't even talk to my 07 Equinox. This scanner also works and 96 (late 95) OBD II and up cars. Just wont read real time engine functions. I also have an Actron that I think I may update.

BMW does in fact use a CAN bus on late model cars for main core components but they sometimes also use LIN,MOST,ByteFlight,FlexRay and others in the same car.

Most OBD II scanners manufactured since 07 are CAN compatible but may or may not be able to communicate with the sub systems depending on software and supported protocols.
Low end readers probably will not communicate with the sub systems at all.

What model is it being used on?Do you want to read codes only? Is resetting the oil inspection service something you want to be able to do also.
The one you were looking at as well as others mentioned should read the most basic codes but not reset the Oil Inspection.

There is one inexpensive unit that may work on the 2009.
The R5/FCX-3-16
It can read engine codes and reset the Oil Inspection and Check Engine lamps.The tool is listed as working up to 2007.I don't know if it will work on an 09.Call them and inquire,on U.S. models the systems it monitors pretty much remain unchanged from 2007.
This is by no means the best or only tool,just one that works and has a lower price tag.It is a BMW only tool.

PS Slightly better prices can be found but IMHO Buying from the manufacturer in this case may bring better product support.
