Scag SR Engine?

Looking at the Scag lineup and noticed that in addition to the typical Kawasaki, Kohler, and Brigds engine options, there is now a "Scag SR Series"engine available.

Engine warranty is through the manufacturers, and it looks like this engine comes with a 5 year warranty through SCAG themselves, which is a longer warranty than, say, Kawasaki.

Here's an example of engine choices on the Liberty Z 61"
  • Kawasaki FR – V-twin
  • Briggs PXi Series – V-twin
  • Kohler® 7000 Series PRO – V-twin
  • Scag SR Series – V-Twin, air-cooled engine, 803 cc
Anyone with thoughts/experience on this Scag SR engine? I know nothing about it.

It is a Chinese Predator engine. Very similar to the Kohler 7000. Exmark is doing this as well with their 708cc Chinese engine that is found on many of the entry level mowers like the Exmark Quest and some of the Toro zero turns. I can't say anything good or bad about them simply because I've only seen one or two and they were pretty new.

My biggest concern would be parts availability down the road. The Predator engines are actually pretty decent, but due to their popularity with racing karts and builders, parts are widely available for the 212cc engines. Other brands of clone engines are a gamble for parts availability.

Yep, Loncin 803cc V-Twin. Parts availability is going to be spotty.
Kohler or Kawasaki would be the best choices.

What are the price differences. I'm not a small engine pro.. but I'd be Kawasaki all day.

All 61” are all the same MSRP of $6999.
The Kohler KT745 is rated at 26hp. The Kawasaki FR730V is rated at 24hp.
The Kohler KT745 has an automatic choke and the Kawasaki FR730V has a manual choke.
The Kohler KT745 has a better air filtration setup than the Kawasaki.
The Briggs and Stratton PXi 2500 makes 25hp. It has a similar choke setup as Kohler.
