Saw G-05 at Autozone last night

The autozone's here in KC area have it also. I had to drive across town to Napa the last time. Didn't pay attention to the price though.

Too late for me, bought 2 gallons of Havoline G05 last weekend at PepBoys for about $11.xx/gallon. Didn't know Autozone carries it, Walmart does not carries G05.

No problems finding Zerex G-05 here in Buffalo, NAPA has it, Carquest has it, I don't think I've seen it at autozone or parts america though.

I searched for it here in Texas when my radiator failed. Was going to try G-05, the only place I could find it was at Pepboys.

Then I read Ray H advice about using dexclones. This is in an older honda that the month before had a radiator flush at the dealer with the high dollar honda fluid.

Bought a new radiator and put all makes all models in it.

Was just checking out fluids in Autozone, funny how BITOG has changed me when I saw that Autozone now carries Zerex G-05 and is cheaper than PepBoys. Though to me AZ seems to beat PepBoys on most prices.

Prestone All Makes All Models is only $8.00/gallon at Wallyworld.

I have Prestone All Makes All Models installed into the Saturn, since last May. I drained the radiator and the block, ran it with tap water for five minutes, then drained/refilled with correct Prestone/water mixture.

Fluid looks fine, some sediment now, smells absolutely horrible, just like the 2-yr old Dexcool I drained out!

Nice! I have to buy a gallon to show the receipt to the dealer at 30K time. Not going to CHANGE it at 30K, but I'll buy the Coolant. Don't think they'll be happy with the receipt from when I bought the car and changed it..

9.00, eh? Does Anti-Freeze keep for as long as engine oil? I mean, does it make sense to "stash" coolant when it's on sale?

az took it out of their lineup last fall but after all of the debate of the one size fits all antifreeze put it back this summer. Definitely the right thing to do

DEX-COOL and G-05 in storage will both likely outlast you. Even in use, these products are incredibly stable (as long as air isn't introduced into a DEX-COOL filled system). In and of themselves, the various organic acid technology hydrated salts common to extended life antifreeze are also used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and prepared foods as preservatives. The reduced levels of silicates in G-05 are no longer problematic regarding "fallout" as was previously the case during the "silicate wars" when Prestone and others raced to see who could stuff the most in their respective products.

As I posted a while back.....DO NOT take the auto part store clerk's word for what the antifreeze is.
I went to several auto part stores, including Napa, that did not have G-05 coolant....and was told that the Prestone all makes was G-05 in one store, and the clerk at the Napa store told me that Peak Global was G-05......all NOT TRUE.
I found the Zerex G-05 at a CarQuest.
If it does not say G-05 on the bottle, it is not.
Even better.....if it says "Silicate Free".....it is not G-05.
I did my homework before shopping....
And did a re-visit to the websites of the companies quoted to me....and was able to clearly see that they were not G-05.

Yes, G-05 is spendy.....perhaps it will come down in price some with more sales volume.
But if not.....it really is not much more money...
I would rather take the money that I save on doing the job myself, and put it into doing it the best I can.

I am really happy that AutoZone is stocking G-05 again.
And, AutoZone does tend to have some good prices....on some good stuff.

This is a little off topic....

but does a coolant with silicates really wear out a water pump much faster compared to the G-05 or Honda coolant?

I would think regular high silicate antifreeze isn't a problem on the water pump unless as long as they're disolved and don't start to precipitate out. Otherwise I'd think you might get a mild sandblasting effect on the pump impeller.

The problem with formerly high silicate content antifreeze formulations was that the silicates were prone to fall out of solution - first as a gell-like glop that was difficult for the water pump to push through smaller cooling system passages, and later, as hard, erosive precipitates. (There was a reason "tradional green" of a decade ago only carried a shelf life of two years. High levels of silicates are unstable in solution.) Once exhausted coolant was sufficiently devoid of dissolved protective silicates, erosive cavitation effects on water pump impeller blades became a matter of "when", not "whether". Throwing OAT and the reduced levels of silicates in G-05 at the problem has come as close to a universal problem solver as anyone's managed so far. (and I say that unhesitatingly despite my own successful experiences with DEX-COOL and dexclones in three vehicles under my own care for over seven years)

Refresh my thick skull, Ray?

Silicate can come out of solution, I would imagine, from a low-silicate solution (such as our beloved G05) as well as high-silicate syrup, yes? No?

And if that's the case, why bother with the silicate at all? Is the rapid-action healing you get from the silicate worth the possibility of the stuff falling out of solution and beating up the water pump? Why not just make it all OAT, but hopefully not the same compound as DexCool, which tends to cause trouble for troubled, airy systems? Or is THAT the philosophy that keeps DexCool out on the shelves all these years after a few folks had trouble?

G-05, you know, that coolant formulation developed by BASF and licensed to various companies such as Zerex, popular with the later Fords I think and some other makes. There's other G- formulations too.
