I've got a 1998 Saturn SW1 with about 150k on it. I'm having problems with a EGR related check engine light. Its throwing both P0405 and P1404 codes.I tried cleaning out the original EGR valve, then replaced it with a new Delphi unit, and cleaned the connection. It is still throwing the same codes. Any ideas? Just thought I should mention that this is one Saturn that DOESN'T use oil.. smile

Saturn that doesn't burn oil??!?!?!?!You sure its actually running LOL Mine burns some oil. Be sure the passages aren't clogged and check for 5v reference to the egr

I have had the P1404 many times and cleaning or replacement resolved this on my 99SL2. I don't know? When stumped I tend to visit Saturnfansforums.com and search the S-Series Tech section. If that does not work I just start a new thread there.

This is what you do, as I did on my SL-1. (Got it from Saturnfans.com) - Warm the engine up a bit, but not too hot. - Take off & disconnect the EGR valve. - Start the car. It will rev up to 4,000 RPM immediately. - Let it run for 5-8 seconds. - You may (will) see black carbon from the passage blow out of the holes. - Turn the engine off. - Pull the PCM-B fuse for 5 minutes and put it back in. That should take care of it.

Need the follow-up... slobber LOL Hey - what were the results...??

Sorry it took me so long. I took off the valve and ran it for a few seconds. A good deal of carbon blew out of the egr holes. Ever since I've had an intermittent CEL as opposed to it being on all the time. When I get some time I think I will repeat the process. Thanks

I replaced my EGR on my SL2 due to carbon being stuck in pintle. My car would hardly idle. Cleaning would only last 3,000 miles before my car would not want to idle. Besides briefly running car with EGR off to blow out carbon, I installed a Klean Screen EGR gasket. The screen blocks the large chunks from getting into the EGR. I went 40,000 miles before throwing P1404 code and never had the situation where car would not idle after installing the Klean Screen. Cleaned EGR in 15 minutes and Klean Screen could be reused. The Klean Screen is available in parts stores. It was invented in St. Louis and I happened to live close to the company that distributes them. If you do a search Sherco Auto Supply has a nice picture and description of the Klean Screen.

Well I've ran the car a couple of times now with the egr valve off and the light just keeps coming back. New EGR is clean. Not sure where to go next with this..
