Sanden 4440 vs 4261

Im finally getting around to replacing the HT6 compressor in my S-10 with an appropriate Sanden.

I know others had said the 4440, so when I went to the site, I put in for the new Sanden compressor and thought I was getting the right one.

As it turns out, they sent me a 4261 instead of the 4440... UGH!!

The ONLY difference I can see is that the 4261 (which apparently is the recommended compressor for the S-10 trucks from '99 on) has a "rotor" size of 112 vs 130.

I double checked my invoice and the recommendation on the site and it lists the model I have (which is the 4261), so I think the website had the wrong cross reference. Everything I see points to the 4440:

For 1998.

So my question is, what is the difference? I don't know what it means that the rotor size has changed... I can't imagine that much else changed with the truck's AC system between 1998 and 99, and the 4261 was used until they stopped production.

Im not looking to do anything stupid or wrong, but sometimes these changes really aren't much of anything, and sometimes they are... The truck AC works GREAT, almost too good (its a regular cab).

Will a 4261 work in place of a 4440? All it would do is let me maintain my scheduled appointment for evacuation tomorrow, and prevent me from having to ship and swap compressors (plus the time hassling on the phone over it). I don't want to take any chances, just need to know if anyone knows about these and their differences...

Why not wait till the old compressor dies before replacing it with a new one? Since the AC works great now.

I'm guessing he does not want the compressor to throw all kinds of junk into the plumbing if it lets go completely.
 
Both have the same displacement. Looks like the front hub sticks out a little farther on the 4621 but the belt rides in the same place. I think they are interchangable and I have no clue as to why the hub sticks out farther on one.

BTW you may need to install washers between the body and the mounting bracket. They may be included.

Also remember that the HT6 is lubed by oil in the system and the Sanden has a sump capacity of 8oz IIRC and must be filled through that bolt on the side
 
The 4261 I got from sander indicates that it is filled with oil.

As for why not leave it? It is a belly leaker compressor, and with the leaking refrigerant is oil. If the oil gets too low, then the compressor is bound to seize. No thanks. Plus it's in violation of the clean air act to knowingly refill refrigerant into a leaky system. In this situation, it's the best move all around.

Does the rotor size mean anything to you? I don't know if that implies the pulley, the shaft it's on, or some inner workings. I'd think that the updated version if used in later s-10 trucks would be better but who knows.

Could the hub sticking further out create a serpentine belt alignment issue?

I'm guessing the smaller rotor size had to do with fuel efficiency targets. I guess I'd rather have the 4440, not knowing enough to know if the amount of work the compressor does at idle and slightly off-idle makes enough difference. But what if you get it back from the shop and cooling is marginal at idle? Or, passenger side is cold, driver side is 10F above passenger? You'll always wonder if it's the compressor.
 
Anyone even looking at the pictures? I'm no genius but something is different. LOL
Pulley diameter looks smaller on one and 2 extra looks like mounting tabs on the other, use the bottom housing bolt for reference for pulley size.

Well the one was listed as having a rotor size of 112 and the other 130 (iirc), so the pulley could be directly related. Or do you think they're calling the pulley the rotor?
 
You would think so but who knows when the publish this..

Exactly. I don't see any good coming from messing around with the wrong one. At best its a shorter belt at worst it going to over rev and possibly have a shorter lifespan.
 
Many times things get lost in translation from the original language or it was translated to GB English which can be different also.
Thats all i can think of but it definitely is the pulley in this case.
