Is SAEJ599 still relevant when it comes to modern lighting? I believe it was the standard from 1997 when halogen reflectors were common. Has anything changed with LED lighting that many vehicles comes standard with these days?

The modern rule of thumb is 2" of drop at 25ft. If it's a lifted truck, its generally 3-4" of drop at 25ft. Now if its a low sports car, use your best judgment as most of the time about 1" drop is good.
