Runzas- perfect for a cold, rainy day in the trenches

I should make them at home but the bread part sounds like a lot of work to feed 5 kids. Could just do the filling on hamburger buns.

I keep forgetting about Runza when I am over in Council Bluffs.
You could just use ready-to-go sourdough dough in a bag from the store. Should let it come to room temperature and let it rise twice.

There's a pretty common (around here) homemade variation (restaurant knockoff) that uses Crescent roll dough to make a casserole, on top and bottom of a filling. It works pretty well for how easy it is.

That would work. Biscuits would work also.

I worked in Council Bluffs 18 years and retired a couple years ago.
Only had 1/2 hour lunch break. Runza was too far for that time frame, so I never had lunch there.
Brought my own food 95% of the time anyway.
When I go over there I come across 34 and up to the south edge of town. I usually stay by the casino. I see there is one in Glenwood.

Like a Pillsbury Grands! out of the refrigerated cardboard tube? I think their pizza dough would be more suitable because it's at least yeast dough. But you can get bagged and (sort of) fresh pizza dough at pretty much any supermarket.

Their chili is outstanding!!!
You guys are talking about the Runza chain, right? Is the Runza or bierrock the only Wolga-German food they sell? By the way, the Wolga-Germans based their runzas on the meat pies popular with the Tatars not to get confused with the Tartars. Georgian khachapuri anyone? Cheese pies are good, too.

I am talking about that chain. As far as the runza being the only Wolga-German food that is sold there, I imagine it is because the other things they sell are burgers, chicken strips, chicken sandwiches, some wraps and a couple of different salads. Side are fries or onion rings (or both).

Here is their menu:

Whenever I am back in Omaha, I always eat at a Runza Hut at least once.

I see. Well, at least it's not like Wienerschnitzel where you can't get a Wienerschnitzel. :ROFLMAO:

Yes or as my dad calls them whopum biscuits. I call them death biscuits after I had one go off like a shotgun when I opened it. I only buy the store brand ones though since I have to cook 4 tubes at a time. Pizza dough would work. Or I could use the frozen roll dough. Or not be lazy and make dough.

Is there anything else in the meat mix other than onion cabbage and seasoning? Could add a brick of Velveeta to the filling. My wife would add cream of mushroom.

I don't think I'd want cheese with cabbage. But a meat or ham and cheese filling would work for me. Maybe a stroganoff with mushrooms filling because I do like cream. The possibilities are endless.
