running Amsoil XL longer than 6 months?

Hi gang,

Just a quick question, possibly for the Amsoil guys.

How do you feel about running Amsoil XL for longer than 6 months, if the mileage on the oil at the 6 month mark is only 4500 miles? They say its good for closer to 7500.

Is it just a suggestion to help differentiate the Amsoil products? 6 month 7500 vs 12 month 25K?

If your driving conditions are normal, I wouldn't hesitate to run that oil for 3 more months, or 9 months total. Using 4500 miles in 6 months as a benchmark, you'll have 6750 miles after 9 months. You may want to sample the oil and do a used oil analysis, just to make sure, but the XL series is a stout group III oil and will prolly be fine.

Not a problem at all. I feel the XL line is a LOT stronger than what Amsoil gives it credit for, and it will easily do 10k miles.

In your scenario, I'd run it a full year, 9k miles, w/o a thought.

I'm thinking the same thing. The XL line was designed to market to people who want the API certification and comply with their warranty to the letter. So 6 months or 7500 miles pretty much covers all bases. IMO the oil could go longer than the 6 month time frame. People are running PP and the regular flavor M1 for longer than that.

Fine to run longer than 6 months *IF* your recommended OCI is longer, following a OLM or have a used oil analysis to back it up.

IMO, XL is Amsoil's BEST oil.

I was thinking of stretching it out mainly to offset the slightly higher cost of buying something else locally on sale.

I'm currently a dealer, but was thinking about dialing it back to the "preferred customer" deal they have. It works out so close in price to other group 3's even when they're on sale...its a wash. With a bit of an extension passed 6 months, it would more than compensate.

I figure Amsoil made it a 6 month oil, because it was a clear division between their products.

Basically why pay for the top end stuff to run an oil for slightly longer time wise. They probably didn't want to shoot themselves in the foot.

Thanks for the vote Bill, it seems to be working quite well in both our cars. Its a great value in my opinion. We don't get many real steals on oil up here anymore. They really jam us.

That's too bad that up there the oil is so expensive. I wonder if there are more fees/taxes that are hidden that prices it so high.

I've said before here that *IF* someone was providing ANY oil to me for free I'd run Amsoil XL and be a happy man.

Blanket coverage has to exceed the need of "average". Just like blanket coverage of one year does. If 9 months/10k wasn't such an odd number for me, I'd do XL for that duration ... probably more if I had some vehicle with longer commutes (like 70+/day round trip).
