Royal Purple? No GF-5/SN

Interesting, I was just looking up products on API's Licensee Directory. As of late, Royal Purple has no products that meet the latest API SN, ILSAC GF-5 performance specifications that went into effect October 1st.

Is RPs target market for 2004 and older automotive engines only?

Considering that only RP 0w-40 and 5w-40 were SM rated, I doubt that SN rating on any of their oils is a high priority to them. They do offer their own warranty, for what its worth.

Well RP kept most of their oils SL rated when every other oil on the market was SM rated. They didn't want to reduce the ZDDP in their oils.

I think if RP moves up to GF-5 standards, they won't meet their own. Either way they will have business no doubt.

I recieved a reply on some other questions from RP that included mention of a 5w20 SN formulation being released this summer.

There was a blurb in a SEMA clip posted here a few months back where they talked of some possible reformulating. The poster who said RP kept most things SL for the extra ZDDP, rather than reformulating for SM, was correct. That is why they did it. I am just guessing here but the 2 weights that are SM may have been done because they are newer weights that were never certified to SL? SM may have been their only option if they wanted them certified.

I wouldn't mind if they came out with an SN 5W-20. I have to run 5W-20 in my truck and have been using their SL. Technically for warranty I need SM so I have been crossing my fingers nothing happens that results in a fight with the car mfg over SL.

^Even if the mfg called for SM, wouldn't they have to PROVE what FAILED was a RESULT of using SL for a specific reason? Lubrication failure? Sorry, it's late.

FWIW, I've got a friend I'm trying to get a used oil analysis done on a moderate modded Nissan Titan that runs RP 5w30, obviously the Titan came out after API-SM was the 'new' back then. He's gotten the best performance with RP so far, but no dyno tests have been performed. I had no experience with RP before and was surprised quite honestly to see it said API-SL, but the previous poster makes a great point about the why.
